I can’t edit my theme? Says failed to load page?

Topic summary

Theme editor shows a “Failed to load page” error when trying to edit a Shopify theme (screenshot provided).

  • Scope and recency: Multiple occurrences reported today; a related thread (“Liquid error memory limits exceeded”) suggests wider, ongoing issues.
  • Affected environments: Reports indicate it’s not theme-specific and primarily affects Google Chrome. Editing works in Firefox. Chrome Incognito mode works, implying a browser/session factor.
  • Troubleshooting/workarounds: Shopify Support advises clearing cookies and resetting the browser, which temporarily helps but the problem often returns after hours or days. Identifying the specific problematic cookie is difficult.
  • Open questions: Whether the issue impacts all themes vs. some remains unclear. Participants asked if problems persist and sought confirmation of scope.

Status: No confirmed fix or official resolution in the thread. Interim workarounds are using Firefox or Chrome Incognito, or clearing cookies, while root cause (cookie/session vs. memory limits) remains unconfirmed.

I can’t edit my theme? Says failed to load page?

Hmm, this is not the first one today.

Does it happen with any theme or just some?

Looks like its happening a bit https://community.shopify.com/c/technical-q-a/liquid-error-memory-limits-exceeded/td-p/2826678 - Are you still having problems?

This has been a problem in Chrome for a number of weeks now but don’t think it’s theme specific (all works ok in Firefox). Shopify Support will ask you to clear cookies and reset browser which as we know is a pain as it clears all logins etc across all sites. But even doing this will find the problem return either hours or a few days later. All works ok in Incognito Mode so probably is a cookie problem or something but having the time to track down which one is difficult.
