I Can't Migrate my domain from Namecheap to Shopify without getting a failure notice

Topic summary

User reports repeated failures transferring a domain from Namecheap to Shopify over ~2 weeks. Entering the Namecheap auth code in Shopify returns a generic failure with no reason, while charging the account each attempt. Namecheap confirmed settings on their end; user can’t find live support and asks how to handle multiple charges. A screenshot shows the transfer failure notice.

Suggested path forward: avoid transferring the domain and keep Namecheap as the registrar. Instead, point the domain to Shopify by updating DNS (Domain Name System) records at Namecheap (A record and CNAME) and then connect the domain in Shopify. Official setup guides for Shopify and Namecheap were provided.

Billing guidance: contact Shopify Support directly to inquire about refunds for the failed transfer charges.

Notes and status:

  • Cause attribution: responder believes the transfer issue is likely on Namecheap’s end if the auth code was copied correctly, though this is not confirmed.
  • Resolution: no confirmed fix yet. Actionable workaround is to connect via DNS and bypass the transfer. Outstanding items: obtain refunds and, if desired, revisit transfer after DNS connection is stable.

I have been trying to migrate my domain from Name Cheap to shopify for almost 2 weeks. I have tried several times to start the process at name cheap, I receive the auth code and go to shopify and put it in and it says it failed but doesn’t tell me why but charges my account everytime. I have confirmed twice that everything is set correctly on Name Cheap’s side and they have told me to check at shopify. I cant seem to find any live chat or help other than this forum and I am extremely frustrated. I chose shopify because I was told it was very user friendly and I have accomplish everything but this. Also how do I deal with the multiple charges?

If you’re okay with continuing to use NameCheap as your domain provider, then there’s no real reason to even try the transfer to Shopify. You can just edit the domain’s DNS settings on NameCheap’s end, to point to the new Shopify store, and then everything will work just fine.

With regards to the fees you were charged for the transfers – you’d have to reach out to Shopify’s support team directly, to find out if there’s any way to receive a refund for those. With all that said, the issue with the domain name transfer would of definitely been on NameCheap’s end (if you’re sure that you copied over the auth-code correctly).
