I counted 207,297 AI citations from shopping prompts. ChatGPT cited Reddit zero times

The standard advice for AI search right now is get on Reddit. The studies behind it are real, but they were run on SaaS and tech queries. I wanted to know if it holds when someone is asking what to buy, so I counted every citation we logged on shopping prompts.

207,297 citation instances, April to August this year, from 24,216 visibility checks across 107 Shopify stores and 3,601 buyer decision prompts, on ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Perplexity and Claude.

Reddit across the whole corpus: 1,032 citations. 0.5%.

By engine:

ChatGPT: 0 out of 58,846

Gemini: 1 out of 122,958

Google AI Mode: 578 out of 17,145, so 3.4%

Perplexity: 453 out of 8,190, so 5.5%

The ChatGPT row is the one that should change what you do. Not rare. Zero, across four months of buying questions.

What gets cited instead is the boring answer. On ChatGPT, retailer and marketplace pages are 52.8% of citations and brand or store sites are another 14.7%. Two thirds of what it cites for a shopping question is a page where the product actually lives. Blogs 7%, community 3.6%, review sites 2.6%.

And where community does get cited in shopping, it is mostly YouTube. YouTube is the number one community source on every engine and out cites Reddit two to one corpus wide, 2,189 to 1,032.

Caveats, same as last time. This is descriptive, I am counting what engines cited, not proving why. The prompt mix is my merchants, so cycling, books, fashion, outdoor gear, wellness, weighted to buyer decision questions, and an electronics price comparison corpus might look different. Claude is undersampled at 158 citations, too few to report. Gemini masks 99.7% of its citation URLs behind redirects, which is why its unclassified share is inflated.

Where Reddit did earn citations it was narrow and specific: r/cycling 169, r/mtb 55, r/journaling 45, r/gravelcycling 43, r/suggestmeabook 40, r/malefashionadvice 30. Hyper specific enthusiast threads, not brand promotion spaces. So the honest version of the advice is that if your niche has a genuinely active subreddit and your buyers use Perplexity or Google AI results, real participation can pay. Everyone else is better off with the hours going into product pages.

One more number that surprised me. Citations spread across 17,695 domains, and inside their own niches two independent stores in the set each earned over 240 ChatGPT citations on prompts where amazon.com earned 22. Domain size is not what wins these.

The thing I cannot answer with my own data: has anyone here put real effort into Reddit for AI visibility and actually seen it turn into citations or sessions? If it worked for you I would like to know which niche and which engine, because my corpus says it only works in a narrow slice and I would rather find out I am wrong.

The two independent stores getting 240+ ChatGPT citations while Amazon only got 22 is probably the bit I’d want to dig into next. If those stores are winning because their product pages answer very specific buying questions well, that’s a much more actionable finding for merchants than “build authority” or “get mentioned on Reddit.”

The number that needs a different kind of explanation is the 0 out of 58,846. Ranking badly produces small numbers, not clean zeros. A zero at that sample size usually means something upstream excluded the source rather than weighed it and passed.

The first thing I would rule out is which surface those checks came back through. A buying question on ChatGPT can be answered off the product surface, which leans on structured retailer and merchant data, or off ordinary web retrieval, which cites whatever it pulled. Those two do not share a citable set. If all 58,846 landed on one of them, the zero is a property of that surface and not of the engine, and the advice that falls out is different, because no amount of posting on Reddit gets you into a product feed.

There is a cheap way to separate the two with data you already collect. Same products, same engine, same window, but ask the research shaped version instead of the buying shaped one, so what do people say about X or is X worth it rather than best X for Y. If Reddit comes back nonzero on the research phrasing and stays at zero on the buying phrasing, what you have measured is prompt routing. If it stays at zero on both, then the finding really is about Reddit, and that is a much larger claim than the one you are currently making.

The engine split is consistent with the routing reading too. Google AI Mode at 3.4% and Perplexity at 5.5% are the two most openly retrieval driven of the five, and they are exactly the two that are nonzero.

Did you log which of your ChatGPT checks hit the product surface? If you can split the 58,846 that way, the answer is already in the data you have.

I’d treat the clean zero as a routing flag, not proof that Reddit never matters for ChatGPT shopping.

  • Pick 20 products and test 3 prompt types: best X for Y, is X worth it, and what do owners say about X.
  • Run each 5 times in fresh chats. Log citations, product cards, model, date, and whether web search appeared.
  • Classify the visible response surface rather than guessing the internal route. Product cards versus linked web sources is enough to expose a pattern.
  • Until that split is clear, merchants should prioritize complete product feeds, Product schema, comparison details, FAQs, shipping and returns over Reddit posting.

Did your logs capture product cards or web-search indicators alongside citations?
