Hi, I wanted to get your thoughts on this.
We have custom products featuring four customizations: size, color (normal Shopify variants), stitch line color, and placement. The only fields relevant for stock are size and color (for which we have stock for each combination), while stitch line color and placement are chosen by the customer at the time of ordering, in addition to size and color. These two fields generally serve for pricing. Currently, we are using one of these apps for product customizations, which works somewhat but limits us due to the app’s technical setup. For example, the’ add to cart’ button must check if the customer selected all four options, making it impossible to use standard features like a scrolling’ add to cart’ button without development.
I was wondering if I could replace the app with only Shopify’s standard features and drop the app we are currently using. So, my question is, do you think I could utilize product or variant metafields in a way that:
-
Stock relevant: Only color and size are relevant for SKU determination.
-
Price and picture visualization: I need the corresponding pictures to display when the customer selects all four options on the order page, and potentially include a price add-on for some values in the metafield (for example, if I have a metafield called’ placement’ and the customer selects placement A, I would add an extra $5 to the product price).
-
still show and control easily the metafiled show or hide in the product pages
Any advise on how to manage this or shall we simply keep the customization app (being that than I need to find the right one cause the one we have is lacking on some aspects
A customization app can take the place of Shopify’s built-in features, like product and variant metafields and native functionalities. There are restrictions to take into account, though. Size and color options should continue to be standard Shopify variations, and inventory management will take care of stock tracking for these combinations. Shopify metafields can be used to add more customizations, like the color and location of the stitch lines. Dynamic pricing based on metafields can be achieved using line item properties, and image visualization can be done using JavaScript or Liquid code. Metafields can also be shown or hidden easily on product pages using Liquid logic in the theme. The user experience, scalability, and dynamic pricing complexity are some of the drawbacks when compared to specialized customization apps.
Replacing your existing app with Shopify’s native features may necessitate custom development for dynamic pricing adjustments, image visualization, and validation logic if your current app is restricting functionality and you want more control. Investigating alternative apps that enable stock tracking, support dynamic pricing, offer smooth image updates, and provide customization options might be more appropriate if you would rather have a simpler setup without custom coding.

Hi @CF_shop
If you want a simple, no-code way to show extra options like stitch color or placement (with price add-ons) while keeping size and color for stock, Easify Product Options could be a solid choice. Easy setup, dynamic display, and no custom code needed. Here’s how it works:
- This is the app setting: You can set Size and Color options with Shopify Variants, then go to Easify Product Options to create option set for stitch line color and other customize options.
You can set add-on price, and if you don’t set your option as a Required Field, your customers can add to cart or buy without selecting an option.
I hope this answer helps solve the problem. If you need further assistance, feel free to reach out to Easify anytime!
