Shopify Payments is our native gateway and comes with certain benefits that are not offered by using a third-party gateway. Some of the great benefits are no transaction fees, only paying credit card rates, selling in multiple currencies, receiving payouts from your Shopify admin and much more.
When using Shopify Payments, our team may do checks on accounts and take a look at the overall well-being of a store. This can include reviewing requested documents, how soon orders are fulfilled, and any high-risk orders that may be placed. This helps our team determine our merchants continued eligibility to use Shopify Payments.
I understand that you’ve already tried uploading identity documents for verification however, it has not been accepted. When uploading a government-issued photo ID, it must meet the following requirements.
Government Issue Photo ID Requirements:
- The ID must be a standard government-issued photo ID. Commonly we accept driver’s licenses, passports, and federal identity cards.
- It must be a photograph taken using a camera, for example with a cellphone. We cannot accept scans or copies of IDs. The photo provided must be high quality, clear, and in colour, we cannot verify with greyscale or scanned images.
- All edges should be visible (nothing cut out of the picture). No information can be redacted or covered.
- There cannot be any watermarks over the images, and they should not be edited in any way.
- It must completely match the name on the Shopify Payments account.
- The date of birth on file must match the provided ID.
- Where front and back are required, we will need two separate files (one for the image of the front and another file for the image of the back).
- Only the “front” of a passport is required (the full open page where your photo is), we do not need an image of the back of a passport.
- It must be valid, we cannot accept expired IDs.
Could you let us know what region/country you’re based in? Which documents we can accept varies by Shopify Payments region.

few months without any complications. I don’t know why shopify wants me to
do this all of a sudden when everything was already fine.
