You definitely don’t need to build this yourself — there are apps that do the click-to-build box flow out of the box. A few worth comparing: NeatBundles (disclosure: I’m the founder), Kitenzo ‑ Bundle Builder, and Easy Bundle Builder.
On NeatBundles specifically: it’s mix-and-match, so you set up one builder with steps (“pick 3 candles”, “pick a card”, “add a message”) and the customer clicks their way through it on the product page — no pre-building every possible combo. It’s click-based rather than literal drag-and-drop, so if dragging items into a box is a hard requirement, worth knowing upfront. Setup is guided and doesn’t need any code. You could give CrossSell a try. It has a bundle/build-a-box option and the setup is fairly straightforward, so you can create bundles without having to build your own solution from scratch.
I’d probably test it with one simple bundle first and see if the experience matches what you’re looking for. Might save you a lot of the headache of trying to build it yourself!
