I want to change the primary market location

Topic summary

Multiple users are unable to change their primary market location in Shopify, despite adding new markets. The “Set as primary market” option doesn’t appear in the dropdown menu for non-primary markets.

Root Cause Identified:

A key limitation prevents certain markets from becoming primary:

  • Markets configured with subfolders cannot be set as primary (to avoid 404 errors)
  • Markets containing multiple regions cannot be primary (primary markets must contain only one region)

Solution:

To change the primary market:

  1. Create a new market with only the single country you want as primary
  2. Ensure it uses either the primary domain or a separate domain (not subfolders)
  3. The option to set it as primary should then appear

Alternatively, update existing market domain settings from subfolders to primary/separate domain configuration.

Related Question:

One user asks how to completely remove the USA as primary and keep only Egypt as their sole market, seeking clarification on applying this solution to their specific case.

Hello, I would like to change my primary market place from Turkey to the USA. I’ve added the US marketplace, but I can’t set it to primary, can you help with this?

To change your primary marketplace from Turkey to the USA on Shopify, follow these steps:

  1. Add the USA as a Market:
  • It looks like you’ve already added the USA as a market. If not, go to Settings > Markets and add the USA.
  1. Set the USA as the Primary Market:
  • Shopify allows you to set a primary market, which determines the default currency and language for your store. Here’s how to set the USA as your primary market:

Step-by-Step Guide to Changing the Primary Market

  1. Log in to Your Shopify Admin:
  • Go to your Shopify admin panel.
  1. Navigate to Markets:
  • Click on Settings in the bottom left corner.
  • Select Markets from the settings menu.
  1. Manage Markets:
  • You should see a list of your active markets. Look for the Primary Market section.
  1. Edit the Primary Market:
  • Click on Manage next to your current primary market (Turkey).
  • Look for an option to Change Primary Market.
  1. Set USA as Primary:
  • Select the USA from the list of markets. If there isn’t a direct option to change the primary market, you might need to adjust some settings manually. Here’s how:
  • Click on the (three dots) next to the USA market.
  • Select Set as primary market.
  1. Adjust Settings for the New Primary Market:
  • Ensure all settings for the USA market are configured correctly, including currency, language, and tax settings.

Additional Steps to Ensure a Smooth Transition

  1. Update Currency Settings:
  • Go to Settings > General and check that the default currency is set to USD.
  1. Update Tax Settings:
  • Ensure that tax settings are configured correctly for the USA. Go to Settings > Taxes and duties.
  1. Review Shipping Settings:
  • Make sure your shipping settings are configured for the USA. Go to Settings > Shipping and delivery.
  1. Check Storefront Settings:
  • Ensure that your storefront reflects the changes. This includes updating any locale-specific content.
  1. Test the Changes:
  • Browse your store as a customer from the USA to ensure everything displays correctly and the shopping experience is as expected.

If you encounter any issues or the option to set the USA as the primary market is not available, consider the following:

  • Contact Shopify Support: Shopify Support can assist you with backend changes if you’re unable to set the primary market yourself.
  • Shopify Plus: If you are on Shopify Plus, you might have more advanced options and direct support from Shopify to make this change.

By following these steps, you should be able to change your primary marketplace to the USA and ensure all settings are properly adjusted for this new primary market.

I am having this problem as well. I have three markets set up: EU, UK, and US. The UK is set as my primary market, but I want to be selling primarily in the US. I have followed all of the steps in setting up these markets, but the UK remains my primary. If I go into either the EU or US ones, there is no option to make a market primary; the only options I have available from the drop-down are ‘Edit Market’ and ‘Delete Market.’ I’ve double-checked my currencies, and everything is set to US dollars. Am I missing something? Have I set something up wrong? I’ve been trying to reach out to support but I can’t get through.

Hi, I struggled with this problem for several days. Please see what I found below and my problem was solved.

Limitations:- International with subfolders - to avoid creating 404s, markets with subfolders can’t be made into a primary market. If you want to make a market with subfolder domain configuration into a primary market, then update the market’s domain settings to either using the primary domain or using a seperate domain.

  • International with more than one region - as primary markets are limited to contain only one region, you can’t make a multi-region market into a primary market.

It basically means that you need to add a market WITHOUT sub folders. Just add a market with the country you need to make “primary” and the change will work. You cannot have a market e.g USA and then have other countries or regions under the same. I hope this helps.

so sorry for sounding stupid, but I am new to this. still not sure I understand the solution. I currently have two markets identified, USA as the primary one and Egypt as an additional market. I don’t want to sell in USA at all and would like to delete it. instead only keep Egypt, how can I do that based on your solution?
