In POS, I would like to track the Serial number of certain products at checkout

Topic summary

A merchant needs to track serial numbers for specific products during POS checkout, ideally through scanner input with a pop-up field, and wants future lookup capability by serial number.

Current Challenge:

  • The notes field workaround doesn’t accept scanner input
  • No native Shopify POS solution for serial number tracking at checkout

Suggested Solutions:

  1. Serializer - Product Tracking app:

    • POS extension allows scanning products and serial number barcodes
    • Serial numbers are searchable and linked to orders/customers
    • Limitation: Cannot prompt for serial numbers at checkout; only works when scanning within the app extension
  2. SKUSavvy + ScanSavvy apps:

    • Manages serialized inventory including purchase orders
    • ScanSavvy POS extension enables selling serialized items directly through Shopify POS
    • Automatically updates inventory counts
    • Described as “the only known solution” currently available
    • Includes video demonstration

Both solutions require third-party apps, as Shopify POS lacks built-in serial number tracking functionality.

I need to track serial numbers at checkout only. I was going to use notes as a workaround, but the scanner does not input into this field. In a dream world, a input box would pop up when selling a handful of items to have serial number input by scanner AND I could look up by serial number in the future.

Any clever workarounds or apps for the POS side?

Thanks!

Tracking serial numbers at checkout can be a bit tricky. One workaround is to use a POS app that supports custom fields or serial number tracking. Some apps allow you to add custom fields at checkout where you can input serial numbers manually or via a scanner.

Another option is to look into inventory management apps that integrate with Shopify POS and offer serial number tracking.

Hello, @Cpointpond .

Serializer - Product Tracking may provide a good enough workaround. In the Shopify POS app extension you can scan products and the app automatically opens up a page for trackable products, where you can scan serial number barcodes or manually type them into a text field. The sold product serial numbers are searchable and linked to the order and the customer. So, you could find more information about any specific item in the future.

The downside is that the app cannot “remind” you to add serial numbers at checkout, only when scanning products within the app extension.

@Cpointpond you can utilize the SKUSavvy app to track your serialized inventory then use the corresponding ScanSavvy app to sell your POS inventory through Shopify POS. By utilizing SKUSavvy you’ll be able to place purchase orders and add serial numbers to stock. Then you can track your serialized inventory, pick online orders and fulfill them. With the Shopify POS extension you can easily sell serialized inventory right from the Shopify POS app and this will automatically reduce the stock from your inventory count.

Try out SKUSavvy for free and connect the ScanSavvy app which is the only known solution to this problem currently.
