In Shopify 2.0, how can I ship ONE item in TWO boxes?

I am in the beginning stages of building my store, so want to look into this sooner rather than later.

I have a problem in my current shopify store that I’d like to solve in my new store for Shopify 2.0, thinking Dawn theme. One item, but it must ship in two boxes and I know that at the time I create the listing, as the glass portion is fragile and best shipped in a box different from the metal frames. So, it will for sure ship in two boxes, but my old platform only allowed me to ship in one box. The only way to ship it in two boxes and bill for shipping for the second box after the fact, which makes it unpleasant for a customer not to see the rate up front.

Wondering if there is an app for 2.0 that allows me to calculate shipping cost on TWO boxes for ONE item with UPS or FedEx at the time of listing???

I have this this same question. Did you every get a solution?

Hi @oliezi ,

Shopify Shipping doesn’t support combining multiple packages into one label.

However, the Multi Carrier Shipping label app allows you to create Multi Piece Shipments (MPS) for FedEx and UPS.

The app automatically selects the right box based on volume or maximum weight, offering rates at checkout and generating shipping labels using multiple boxes.

Keep in mind that for specific or complex packaging needs, approximate rates may be offered at checkout, and you might need to adjust package dimensions when generating the shipping label, as full automation may not be possible in such cases.

Hello, @Mirdas -

I think that what we’re looking for is the exact opposite of what you proposed your app does. What I need is to split a single product sold into multiple packages to be shipped (thus necessitating multiple labels) - not trying to put multiple packages into a single shipping label (somehow. Maybe that’s what you meant..?)

The issue bringing me to the Shopify community pages today:

  • I have a product - a lot of steel concrete fortifiers - that weighs over 150 lbs in total (they are being sold all together).
  • I’d like to offer shipping for this product, but the problem is that if I plug in the actual lot weight, Shopify ultimately won’t allow checkout to complete because there is no shipping method available for packages over 150 lbs.
  • A solution would be to charge shipping for the full weight of the product, divided into 2 boxes, and then purchase 2 labels when fulfilling the order.

Is this what your app does? Anyone else have any suggestions?

Hello @andacat ,

The challenge here is with a single product over 150 lbs. While the app can split packages exceeding the weight limit into multiple boxes, this won’t apply to a single product over 150 lbs.

My suggestion is to show approximate rates using a flat rate at checkout. The app allows you to split a single product into multiple packages while generating the shipping label.

Let us know which carrier you’re using to process your shipments so we can confirm this setup.

Hi there,
Thanks for your message. I guess I’m confused as to how it would work..? You said, “while the app can split packages exceeding the weight limit into multiple boxes, this won’t apply to a single product over 150 lbs.,” but you say in the next paragraph, “the app allows you to split a single product into multiple packages while generating the shipping label.” These seem like the same thing to me - I guess I’d have to see how it works to understand the difference.
Possible to provide screenshots to help illustrate how this would work? I’m using what Shopify enables for larger packages, which in this case would be UPS (if sent domestically).
Thanks for your assistance!
Andrea

Hello @andacat ,

Here’s how it works with the PluginHive app for UPS:

Rates at Checkout:

  • If a single product weighs over 150 lbs, UPS doesn’t provide rates for it.
  • However, if the combined weight of multiple products exceeds 150 lbs, the app will split the items into multiple packages and calculate accurate rates for you.

Shipping Labels:

  • When generating a UPS label, you can split a single product into multiple packages directly in the app.
