"Index of" Error message, domain not connecting

Topic summary

A Shopify store owner encountered an “Index of” error message preventing their website from loading properly. The issue appears related to DNS configuration.

Key Details:

  • The error displays a directory listing instead of the actual website
  • DNS settings show both A records and CNAME records configured
  • The domain cannot be deleted from the Shopify admin panel for reconnection

Identified Problem:
A conflicting DNS configuration was discovered: both an A record and a CNAME record exist for the www subdomain simultaneously. This violates DNS standards, as a subdomain cannot have both record types at once.

Suggested Solution:
Remove the duplicate A record for the www subdomain, keeping only the CNAME entry.

Status:
The discussion remains unresolved from the original poster’s perspective, though the responder suspects the issue may have been self-resolved given the time elapsed. Screenshots were provided showing the error page and DNS configuration.

Hello!

I suddenly have the “Index of” error message on my webpage

And i have set up everything correctly in my dns settings

All my A records, and CNAME records are set up correctly in my knowledge, and I can’t even delete my domain, on my shopify admin panel, to reconnect it…

Somebody help me, eit drives me crazy!

Hi,

in the screenshot of your DNS entries, there is also an A record for the www subdomain, even though you already have a CNAME entry for the www subdomain.

I’m surprised the DNS management tool even let you do that, as this is not compliant with the DNS system.

There is a chance resolving that little bit should already help.
As this issue is already a bit older, I suspect you solved it yourself. Do you mind sharing what fixed in the end?

Cheers
