Integrating a regional payment gateway (ClicToPay – Tunisia) for a single store

Hi everyone,

I’m currently working on integrating a regional payment gateway (ClicToPay – Tunisia) into a Shopify store.

At the moment, ClicToPay is not listed as an official Shopify-supported payment provider. My goal is to understand whether native checkout integration (redirect triggered from the “Complete order” button) is possible if I only want to use it for a single store.

My questions:

  1. If I want to integrate ClicToPay directly into Shopify checkout (not post-order redirect), do I need to become an approved Shopify Payments Partner?

  2. Is there any alternative status or program that allows a developer to integrate a custom payment gateway natively for a single store (for example, a private/custom payment app)?

  3. If becoming a Payments Partner is required, what is the correct procedure to request access? Should this be done via Partner Support, a Partner Manager, or another team?

To clarify: I understand that a post-order redirect flow (manual payment method + webhook verification) is technically possible. However, I would like to understand whether native checkout integration is available for regional gateways in cases where they are not yet official Shopify payment providers.

Thank you in advance for your guidance.

To integrate directly into Shopify checkout triggered from the Complete order button the provider must be part of Shopify’s Payment App Payments Partner program. This isn’t something a developer can enable privately for a single store. There’s no “private custom payment gateway” option for native checkout anymore.
Your only alternatives are:
Become an approved Shopify Payments Partner the gateway company itself must apply
Or use an
offsite/manual payment method redirect webhook verification

If ClicToPay wants native integration, they would need to apply through Shopify’s Payment App program via Shopify Partner Support it must be initiated by the payment provider, not the merchant.

Hi @anmolkumar,

Thank you for the clarification — that makes sense.

I have two follow-up questions:

  1. From your experience, is the offsite/manual payment method (order created → redirect → webhook verification → mark paid) considered a production-grade alternative for regional gateways?

In other words, is this the standard and recommended approach for countries where the local gateway is not part of the Payments Partner program?

  1. Regarding apps like CartDNA that appear to integrate ClicToPay directly into checkout — is it safe to assume that they are operating as an approved Shopify Payments Partner (or under a special partnership agreement)?

Or is there any other mechanism that would allow such native integration?

Just trying to fully understand whether this is purely a partnership-level requirement or if there are technical nuances I may be missing.

Thanks again for your help.
