Integrating Recharge with Braintree?

Dear all,

We are serving a customer who wants to migrate their store to Shopify. However, they are using Braintree as their payment gateway. Now, as they want to migrate platform to Shopify, they are considering Recharge subscriptions, however, they still want to keep Braintree. My question is, is it possible to integrate Recharge with Braintree? Would Shopify support us - the partner - with the process? What would be the estimated costs for this service?

I did contact Recharge to confirm the possibility of the integration because I found this info, but Recharge told me to contact Shopify because "Once you migrate, you will be using the Shopify Checkout Integration to process subscription payments, therefore it depends on Shopify what processors are supported, and you can use one of Shopify’s eligible subscription payment processors ."

Hi Irene_phan,

So it does look like if your client does want to be eligible for the subscriptions feature they will need to use Shopify Payments, PayPal Express, or Authorize.net as their payment gateway, as per our requirements here.

Yes I did read the document about payment processors.
Let me clarify my question more. We are planning to use the mentioned
payment gateway, particularly Paypal.
But the problem is that our customer has a large data of users on Braintree
subscription management. Therefore they hope to continue using Braintree.
So my question is, are there any ways for us to integrate Braintree via
Paypal, or any other payment processors approved by Shopify? Is this
process possible? Would you be able to provide me with detailed instruction
documents regarding this?

I haven’t seen cases where merchants have integrated Braintree via Paypal previously - would the flow you are looking for be that subscription payments would be processed on Shopify through Paypal and then routed to Braintree? This could result in transaction fees being charged twice if there’s a payment processed on Paypal first and then on Braintree - which is likely something your client would want to avoid. It may be worth reaching out to Paypal directly to see if they have an existing process to integrate their payment gateway with Braintree subscription management.

Otherwise it could be worth looking into how to migrate customers who are currently using Braintree for subscriptions to one of our supported gateways. There’s a developer doc here that goes through this process specifically for subscriptions.
