Small meat manufacturer seeks an inventory solution integrated with Shopify for both direct-to-consumer (DTC) and wholesale, with variable product weights. Requirements include variable case weights, units of measure, and manufacturing/production tracking.
Feedback centers on two paths: use Shopify’s native tools or add an app. Respondents note many inventory apps exist but emphasize configuration details before recommending one.
Key clarifications requested: whether products are set up with variants, whether Shopify POS (point of sale) is used, and whether all sales occur within Shopify. If inventory is tracked in Shopify and decremented on each sale, native tools may suffice; sales made outside the platform would need syncing back in.
No specific food-focused apps or 3PL (third-party logistics) solutions were proposed yet. One responder believes the goals might be achievable without an app, contingent on setup and workflows.
Status: Ongoing with unanswered questions. Next step is providing more operational details to determine if native Shopify features suffice or if a specialized app is needed.
I am new to operating shopify. We are a small meat manufacturer and we are looking for an inventory management app that connects to shopify. We will be selling DTC as well as wholesale. Our meat weights will be variable. Can shopify handle this type of inventory on its own or is a 3PL/ app best for this use case? Are there any great apps that work well with food specific products? Any help is greatly appreciated.
I think there are quite a few inventory apps on the marketplace. Do you have any special considerations? How would you envision using an inventory app?
Thanks for the reply! We need variable case weights and units of measure
and manufacturing tracking. We will be selling wholesale and
direct-to-consumer, so something that can handle both would be great.
Have you setup products in your Shopify admin with variants? Are you using Shopify POS to take payments?
It’s kinda about how you use the tools. If you are tracking with them and decrease with a sale, it will work without extra effort. If you are using some tools to make sales outside of the platform, you need to sync it back in after the fact. I would need a bit more info before I can suggest anything.
