My current understanding is that AI search results are simply a more user-friendly presentation of information. When it’s boiled down websites still need to be ranked by authority and navigable by crawlers.

So is AEO a whole new playbook or just a couple tweaks to the existing SEO one?

AEO is an essential expansion of the existing SEO foundation, not a replacement. Traditional SEO remains your bedrock infrastructure because AI models still rely heavily on crawlable, authoritative web content to function. If your technical SEO and domain authority are weak, an AI engine will never find your page to begin with.

The true shift in the playbook comes from how your content is retrieved and used. While SEO focuses on ranking links for human clicks, AEO optimizes your content to be extracted and cited directly by AI models. This requires moving away from long narrative storytelling and shifting toward high fact density, structured data, and conversational answers that help reasoning engines map your brand to specific user queries.

Both. And the difference is the whole point.

SEO optimizes pages for ranking. AEO optimizes entities for legibility. Can a machine read your site, understand your brand and products as clean facts, and cite them with confidence.

There is real overlap. Crawlable, structured, and authoritative still win. But the unit changed. Search rewarded the page. AI rewards the entity.

A store can rank perfectly and still be unreadable to ChatGPT, because its products are nice prose and pretty images, not machine readable facts.

So it is not a brand new playbook. It is also not SEO with a new name. The new work is two things. Make your brand and every product a complete, consistent entity. And make sure an AI crawler can actually read the page, because many do not run your JavaScript. Get those two right and you have done most of AEO.
