I recently read the line: “AI agents abandoned fiat because fiat abandoned them.”
The explanation was interesting: “Traditional payment infrastructure has always assumed a human.” Humans can fill out forms, complete KYC checks, click approval buttons, respond to fraud alerts, and recover from failed payments.
But what happens when the buyer is software?
If AI agents become a meaningful source of purchases, do today’s checkout flows, upsell apps, shipping protection offers, warranties, and other add-ons still work? Or are we heading toward a situation where “the payment infrastructure itself becomes the bottleneck”?
Would love to hear how other merchants are thinking about this.
Hi @mdeeni,
That is a fascinating thought, and it actually makes sense. Checkouts today are built entirely for human eyes and human clicks.
Will our current checkouts, upsells, and warranties still work? Yes, absolutely. But the system will definitely have to change.
An AI agent does not care about a shiny pop-up, a countdown timer, or an emotional upsell pitch. It only reads pure data. Soon, we will likely need two different paths. We will keep our normal, visual storefronts for real people, but we will also need a clean, lightning-fast checkout just for software bots to use.
The payment infrastructure will catch up. We will probably see AI using digital wallets or smart contracts to bypass the clunky forms we use today. It is a massive shift, but as merchants, we will quickly adapt just like we always do!
Hi @mdeeni
This is Vineet from Identixweb, a Shopify Development Agency.
This is the part I think most merchants are underestimating.
Today’s ecommerce stack is built for human hesitation. Product pages, reviews, upsells, warranties, shipping protection, cart drawers, checkout nudges, abandoned cart flows.
All of that assumes a person is browsing, comparing, second-guessing, and clicking through decisions.
If the buyer becomes an AI agent, the experience changes completely. The agent may not care about a pop-up or a “limited-time offer.”
It will care about structured product data, trust signals, delivery terms, return rules, price, compatibility, and whether the transaction can complete without friction.
So yes, I do think payment and checkout infrastructure could become the bottleneck because commerce may need two layers: one built for people, and one built for agents. The interesting question is whether Shopify apps and checkout tools will adapt from visual persuasion to machine-readable decision-making.
Nothing to add…just wondering how many of the responses here were written by AI Agents

Hello @mdeeni
It’s an intriguing topic, but merchant value is likely to move rather than end. Checkout upsells, warranties, and shipping protection could become API-driven decisions and no longer visual offers presented to humans.
If AI agents begin buying, merchants that provide structured product data, clearly stated policies, and machine-readable ofers may have an edge. Maybe the checkout experience will change, but pricing, speed of fulfillment, trust, inventory accuracy and service after purchase will still drive the purchasing decision, whether they’re a person or a piece of software acting in their place.
