Hi I have a Shopify store, for an x type of niche, then I decided to buy another unrelated domain, for a completely different type of niche, that I might open another store for.
What I did is that I purchased the domain from my old store, by going to the domain and clicked on buy a domain? If that the right place to do it? Or I need to create another Shopify account and buy the domain from there?

You should transfer the new domain to a new store.

How are you? If you will be using Shopify for the ne store then transferring the domain should not be a problem. Just go to Settings > Domains > Click the domain > Transfer domain > then click Transfer to another Shopify store. The system will send you the transfer link via email then just follow the instructions from there. You can check this article for more information:
