Is it best to link a custom domain to Shopify at the end of development?

I purchased a custom domain from GoDaddy and I need to link it to Shopify. A portion of the site is already live (just some static pages) deployed with Vercel.

Yesterday I tried to link the custom domain to shopify and it worked. I added the following to Vercel and the live site went under password protection (even though the shop wasnt deployed). I had to revert this change as I wanted to test the shop with custom domain. I am still developing with a free account.

The moment I upgrade my account and I link my shopify store to a custom domain I suspect the request password will disappear?

Is it a best practice to link to a custom domain right at the end once the shop works locally?

Thank you

Hi @AlexanderWeb ,

It doesn’t really matter when you add the domain, but of course you don’t need to add the domain until after development has finished. You can disable the password page once the store is handed off, yes.

Hi Victor,

thanks for you reply.

Unless I manage to remove the online store I cannot apply a the live custom domain otherwise it the live site will point to whatever is in the online store.

How would I do that?

Thanks

Hi @AlexanderWeb ,

I am not sure I quite follow. Is your issue that you want to connect the domain but you don’t yet want it directed to the Shopify store? Is the domain being used elsewhere at this time?

Hi Victor,

I have a custom domain which https://www.antoninospizza.co.uk/

The site is fed with data coming from the storefront API.

When I go to the checkout I get this url: https://antoninospizzalondon.myshopify.com/checkouts/….

I need to change that so that it is https://antoninospizza.co.uk/checkouts/...

To do that I need to connect shopify to my custom domain, the moment I do that the live site under (antoninospizza domain) will point to the following because I am not able to uninstall the online store with the theme:

I need to uninstall the online store so when shopify is connected it works as expected.

I hope this helps.

Let me know if you need more info.

Thank you
