I submitted a Shopify app to the Shopify app store. In this app, merchant will able to select the theme, backup it, and then can make changes within the theme Editor.
Once the changes made, like adding a new section, fix any bug etc, then merchant will able to re upload the theme in the theme section.
Checking is it really helpful for you?
Hi @SectionKit
I am not sure merchants would understand “The New way” screenshot, looks like code editor, and I think merchants would not be to eager to use it like that.
But idea itself, is good, and people will use it. I saw some post merchants using Sidekick, and Shopify says that it is improved. Five years ago this would sound like science fiction. But we are moving forward very fast.
Still, you can find some post that would sound " AI did it in 30 seconds, but I had to hire developer for 3 days to fix it and make it work"
Good luck with your app.
Hey @SectionKit
From the support side, I see merchants break their themes constantly. Apps injecting bad code, someone editing theme files without a backup, an update that conflicts with customizations. A quick backup and restore feature is genuinely useful.
But I agree with Laza. If your target is merchants (not developers), the code editor screenshot will scare most of them away. Lead with that safety net angle, not the editor.
Good luck with the app!
Hi @SectionKit,
Quick theme backup and restore is incredibly useful since many merchants accidentally break their theme code during updates or customizations.
Keep the app simple and reassuring. Avoid exposing a code editor to non-technical users. Focus on making backups, restores, and recovery effortless, and the app will have a strong appeal.
Thanks for your great feedback. Actually this app is focus on fixing the issuues/bugs. Sidekick already cover to make the changes via design layout. But not with the coding. So which my app cover this. And hope so client will understood on how to do this job. So instead of linking the store with github, the best way for them to install the app and fix the issue.
Appriciate your feedback @Mateo-Penida, This is why I build the app to make sure theme fetched as a backup and upload in the theme store back, with a new version/theme. So this app will backup the theme.
Regarding the code ediot layout, I would like to know what will be the best solution or UI will help them to fix the issues without digging into the code?
Would appriciate your Suggestion.
Thank you for your great feedback @eva_greene. Appriciated
Hey @SectionKit
From what I see daily working with merchants, most of them panic when they see code. What tends to work well in similar apps is a visual approach: show them what changed (before/after preview) and let them pick from common fixes without ever seeing the actual code. Keep a “show code” toggle for advanced users who want it, but default to the simple view.
Just my two cents
So you are going to replace my job?
Best of luck, but not for my clients
You’re right. Making the UI friendly app will definitly be useful for the merchants.
Haha! Not sure this will replace your Job.
Hello there @SectionKit
This should be good news, particularly for merchants seeking a more secure way to test theme modifications without endangering their live store. Built in backups before editing is a good thing, especially on stores without developers. I’d also think about adding version history, diff of changes and one click restore to enhance the flow even further. If uploading process is able to keep the theme settings and templates intact, I really think this will solve a very big problem for a lot of merchants.
Great noted. I’ll add these options in my app.
