Same thing happened to me. He came back 2 different days and both days made over 20 accounts. All of them used different fake mail accounts
Seems as though this has been slowing down traffic to my store as well. Shopify please step in and deal with this.
I’m more confused now than ever.
Since Shopify has no vacation mode, I had to password protect my shop while my desktop was being repaired. During that time, I received a Page Indexing alert from Google, with a soft 404 error message.
Once I reopened my shop, I clicked on the ‘fix’ link in that google email, and then immediately after received the first 50 abandoned carts by Mustermann.
Afterwards, I received an A-OK from Google, letting me know that everything was fixed. I assumed that this was the end of it – yet I’ve received 100s more of the abandoned carts, my bounce rate is at an all-time high, and sales have tanked and currently non-existent.
If this is a google bot, what is the purpose? Why would google want to cause this disruption and tank visibility?
All I can do is archive the abandoned carts, and cannot find an option to delete them. So far, things have not improved.
I just called shopify support. I let them know our frustration about this and how we need to have control to delete abandoned carts. Of course they recommended an app for 2.99 a month (blocky), are you surprised? So very frustrating to have to buy another app that the shopify store should be able to do on its own. Please make your voice be heard about this being a need in our stores.
This happened to us last week- 100+ abandoned checkouts from Mark Musterman. V Annoying.
Hey Shopify any chance of getting some help with all of these custoemrs haveing this issue?
I’ve got nearly 100 new customer accounts and abandoned carts and shopify will not let me delet them
Hello, everyone.
Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns and feedback surrounding the issue of the bot activity that has created several accounts and/or abandoned carts under the name of “Mark Mustermann” in your stores.
Thanks to the feedback, our developers have begun working on a means of preventing these bot signups.
In the meantime, you can consider enabling spam protection in your admin.
-
Log in to your Shopify admin
-
Go to the Online store
-
Click Preferences
-
Confirm that the spam protection has settings to enable spam protection for:
-
Customer account creation/login/password reset
-
Newsletter email address entry + blog comment entry
You may also consider using an app from the Shopify App Store that is designed to help mitigate bot activity.
We will provide you with an update in this thread once more information becomes available.
Hi Trevor,
My spam protection is enabled and this still happened. Very frustrating! Thank you for looking into it.
Off topic but I’m also having issues with Facebook/Instagram checkout orders not syncing. Just realized that this week after several customers complained of order delays. All of their orders came over from Facebook but not as paid orders. They are showing up as abandoned carts but Facebook has them all pending, credit card authorized and awaiting shipment. It’s a nightmare. ![]()
I am getting registrations from a Mark Mustermann on my website too. The first batch were created 24 days ago and now I see some that were 7 days. Can you let me know when you find out who this is? I hate to delete a customer but this looks suspicious.
How can we prevent them from doing this? We pay per email marketing activity so I don’t want to be paying for a bot.
Ugh, this is so senseless. I got 50 in a few hours. I deleted them from Shopify and Klaviyo. Stupid bots.
I created a Segment in Klaviyo called Fake. I selected everyone with the last name Mustermann. And then I followed these steps: https://help.klaviyo.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005073867-How-to-bulk-delete-or-suppress-email-contacts-in-Klaviyo
This does not work as both Spam protection boxes have always been checked and it still happens to me.
He did the same thing 42 times on my site.
I also had Mark Mustermann add 49 times in 8 minutes span on Saturday between 5:49 pm and 5:57 pm. All of which ‘started checkout’ at least 1 time, some of them 2-3 times in a matter of a few minutes.
I checked all the addresses that were used for Markmustermann in all 8 profiles- and in ALL of those Cities / Addresses were in fact - GOOGLE OFFICE LOCATIONS!
On March 28th, John Smith from Kitchener, Ontario, Canada (johnsmithstore.91@gmail.com) added his profile 8 times but all of them bounced. I thought my settings in Klaviyo were messed up, but support said they were correct and sometimes this happens (email bounces)
I thought the address he/it used looked familiar as I am very close to Kitchener, Ontario and I was correct… Its the Google Kitchener Building @
51 Breithaupt St
Kitchener, ON N2H 5G5
I hope this helps answer your question and/or confirm your suspicions!
This just happened to me tonight! And yes, I set up Google ad campaigns this week (first time in 2 years) and have been deep diving into the analytics. I’m certain it triggered it
Has anyone solved this problem?? So frustated!
This just happened to me today as well under the same name. I do not have any paid ads, so no clue where he came from. He did not subscribe to any of my lists, just created 40-some abandoned carts in a 15 minute window. I have the spam filters checked as well. I am a relatively small business as it is, so don’t even know how it found me.
I really hope this doesn’t impact my store negatively. I’ve had to add so many 3rd party apps lately to resolve random issues like this, it’s costing me so much money and slowing down my website. Will stay tuned to this thread in hopes of another update from @Shopify_77
I’ve done the same.
Created a segment in Klaviyo to capture anyone named “Mustermann.”
Then make a note to delete those accounts in Klaivyo & Shopify once every couple of weeks.
Also looking forward to Shopify’s resolution to blocking this bot.
