Is there any way to enable customers to pay via vis/mastercard gift cards

Topic summary

A merchant asks how to enable Visa/Mastercard gift card payments at checkout, seeing only a standard credit card option.

Official Response:

  • Shopify staff explain that prepaid gift cards function like regular debit/credit cards
  • No separate payment option is needed
  • Customers must register the card with their name and billing address before use, following instructions provided with the card

Reported Problems:

  • Multiple merchants report prepaid gift cards consistently fail at checkout despite proper registration
  • Customers have attempted both online registration and calling card companies without success
  • Error message: “There was an issue processing your payment information”
  • These failures have resulted in lost sales, particularly affecting younger customers without alternative payment methods

Current Status:
The issue remains unresolved. While Shopify’s guidance suggests registration should solve the problem, merchants continue experiencing transaction declines even after customers complete registration steps. The thread indicates an ongoing technical issue specific to Shopify’s payment processing.

Is there any way to enable customers to pay via vis/mastercard gift cards. When I test my checkout, I only see credit card option and no option for the gift card.

I do not sell my own gift cards and wanted to let customer use visa/MC gift cards etc.

Thanks

Hey @trueninja ,

A Mastercard gift card is like a regular debit or credit card. You can use it to make purchases anywhere where Mastercard debit cards are accepted. Shopping with a gift card is much the same as shopping with a credit card. When shopping online, enter your card number, expiry date and 3-digit CVC code.

Therefore no separate gift card payment option is needed as they operate just as a normal MasterCard would.

Let me know if you have any further questions!

Shopify will not process the payment without a name. What name for the gift card should the customer use since the generic card does not have a name on it? Customer tried his own name - no success.

When ordering, buying or registering a Visa® gift card, enter the recipient’s first and last name. If the names don’t match, the Visa gift card could be declined.

For some companies, the process of activation also takes care of registration, which includes linking a name and address to the card. If you purchased the gift card at a store, however, it has probably been activated but not registered–meaning the issuing bank does not know to whom the card belongs. That’s not a big deal if you plan to use the card at a store, but it is an important step for using a Visa gift card online and for recovering a possible lost or stolen gift card.

No prepaid gift card from Mastercard, visa or AMEX has ever gone through for us. It has cost us several sales in the past two years if the person was a minor and had no other way to pay. Very upsetting. There is no longer any option to put in a name so this Shopify response is ineffective. - Mandi (Store manager)

Hi there, @GrumpyBob . Thanks for following up on this thread!

I dug around into some internal resources to see what I could drum up for you on these pre-paid card transactions. Customers should be able to pay for orders using pre-paid cards, but the customer needs to register an address with the pre-paid card first, as per the instructions that are typically outlined on the card. If a customer has not taken the steps to register an address with the card, then the transaction may decline.

As such, definitely recommend to these customers to register an address with the card, and then try their purchase again after doing so. These decline issues for these cards are most often issues with the customer not activating/registering information with the card before using them.

I had this issue and worked with my customer to both go online to register the gift card and called the company. Neither worked. My customer left the store without making their purchase. Unfortunately, this is not the first time this has happened and I am losing sales.

Reviving this from the dead. I’m having this exact same issue. I’ve registered the prepaid VISA gift card and I get error “There was an issue processing your payment information. Please update the card you entered to continue.”

This doesn’t happen anywhere else. Please resolve this issue.
