I’m considering optimizing my site’s URLs for SEO. Will simply checking the box (to create a URL redirect) when changing the URL protect me from an SEO standpoint? I’m concerned about altering the URLs and potentially affecting the ranking. Is there any strategy to follow? Should I change them all at once over a short period or spread out the changes over several weeks?
Hello. In my opinion, changing the URL is not recommended. Especially those urls that are ranking high.
If you still want to change the url, do a 301 redirect from the old url page to the new url. And check out other articles that link back to the old url and change it to the new url.
Good luck
URL optimization is a basical part of SEO and should be varied depending on specific situations.
Changing URLs of high-ranking pages can harm their SEO, as search engines need time to reindex the new URLs. If you decide to optimize URLs, ensure they include relevant keywords and are concise and easy to read. This can improve both SEO rankings and user experience.
TIP**:** Optimizing a large number of URLs individually can be time-consuming. Consider using SEO tools like SEOAnt, which automate this process. SEOAnt’s “AI on-page SEO Scan” helps quickly optimize product links, meta tags, URLs, and other SEO elements based on search engine rules.
Best wishes for the ongoing success of your business.
Shopify automatically created 301 (in fact it is 302, tested many times), but still better not touch the URL, before creating the URL do some research, keep it as short as possible - but informative.
I’ve broken rankings before just by “cleaning up” URLs too aggressively. These days I always audit first, I use the agency Kaizen SEO to map old vs new URLs and make sure all redirects line up. Small details like trailing slashes or inconsistent casing can mess up authority more than people think.
Changing URLs is rarely recommended for high-ranking pages because each URL carries its own authority, backlinks, and user trust. If you must update it for branding or structure reasons, set up proper 301 redirects, update all internal links, and resubmit your sitemap to preserve link equity. In short, optimize URLs only when it supports long-term SEO architecture — not just aesthetics.
