I’m setting up manual tax rules for my India-based Shopify store and facing an issue while configuring GST for two slabs: 5% and 18%.
Here’s what I’m trying to achieve:
For customers in Gujarat (our registered business location):
5% slab = 2.5% SGST + 2.5% CGST
18% slab = 9% SGST + 9% CGST
For customers in other Indian states:
5% slab = 5% IGST
18% slab = 18% IGST
Currently:
I have set the base tax for India as 2.5% to enable SGST + CGST.
I’ve added product overrides for the 18% tax slab:
For Gujarat: set 9% override (with option “added to 2.5% federal tax”).
For other states: set 18% IGST.
Issue:
Even after setting Gujarat’s override to 9%, Shopify still shows 9% SGST + 2.5% CGST instead of 9% + 9%. There is no option to override both SGST and CGST percentages individually.
Questions:
How can I set 9% SGST + 9% CGST for Gujarat correctly?
Should I set base tax to 0% and manually override all states?
Is there a better way to handle different slabs and regions in Shopify’s manual tax system?
Do I need to create hidden collections for each tax slab and manage overrides at the product level?
Would appreciate any guidance from merchants who’ve handled Indian GST setup this way.
Shopify’s manual tax configuration is not compatible with India’s dual GST system. The only way to make this work is to set your basic tax rate to 0% and add overrides for each state and rate. Create two product tax classes - 5% and 18% - then add separate overrides for Gujarat(SGST+CGST) and other states(IGST). This prevents compound errors.
While adding product overrides, Shopify displays the text “x% instead of 2.5% federal tax,” but in reality, it calculates the override as x% in addition to the base tax — not as a replacement.
We’ve tested this setup across multiple states and it works as expected.
Attaching a screenshot of our configuration for reference.
You can verify this by placing test orders from different states using the same setup.
Hope this helps! Let me know if you need further clarification.
