ISSUE: ShopPay creates a new customer, even if customer is logged in to a different email

EXAMPLE: Customer logs into my site with example**@yahoo.com**, but during checkout ShopPay automatically remembers them from a transaction on a different website using example** @Anonymous .com**. Shopify creates a new account on my site for example** @Anonymous .com.**

THE PROBLEM: The customer can not see the order in their order history when logging in under example**@yahoo.com.** More importantly, our site awards loyalty discounts based on previous orders, and now the customer is not getting credit for their order.

SOLUTION: Assign the order to the logged-in customer, and do not create a new customer based on the payment email.

A bandaid would be a feature to combine customers or reassign orders to another customer. But from what I understand, Shopify is not considering this feature.

Hi @jsciabica

Thank you for reaching out to the community forums with your feedback! I understand that the automated process of the Shop Pay feature is overriding your customer accounts that are signed in. I can appreciate how this is not ideal, especially in a rewards based store.

You are correct that at this time we do not offer the ability to merge customer accounts. Each email address used is it’s own unique customer profile, even if the email addresses are used by the same customer. I have gone ahead and provided this feedback to our developers on your behalf so that we can highlight the importance of this!

I would suggest adding a note to your account creation emails to remind customers that they should use their customer account email address even through express checkouts to ensure eligibility for rewards. You do also have the option to disable Shop Pay if you feel that is the best decision for your business.

If you have additional feedback or any other questions about Shop Pay I can help with, please let me know.

Thank you for the prompt and thorough reply!

Yes, I had disabled ShopPay for a period of time, but the benefits of ShopPay currently outweigh the problems. FYI, I have also experienced this with ApplePay. It will create a new customer based on the ApplePay email if different from the customer’s logged-in email address.

The OTHER issue with ShopPay is the stored addresses. They are separate from those stored in the Shopify account, even if it’s under the SAME email address. And ShopPay only stores 5 addresses. I have customers with a dozen addresses for gift giving. They get very confused when they are AUTOMATICALLY pushed to ShopPay and they do not have their addresses.

came back to this post in May 11, 2023, this issue still exists. when my customer purchase with ApplePay, the shopify automatically creates a new customer for them everytime when their Apple ID email mismatch their shopify account email.

That’s correct, but Shopify does now have the ability to merge customers! So at least you can fix it after the fact.
