I’m experiencing an issue with product synchronization between Gelato and Shopify. I’d like to share the details to see if anyone else has encountered the same problem and how they resolved it.
Description of the Problem1. Images not syncing correctly:
On Gelato, I created products with a custom design on both the front and back. For each product, I selected at least two images in the mockup: the first shows the front, and the second shows the back.
After syncing the products to Shopify, only the first image displays correctly. The second image (the back) displays with an incorrect color (for example, if the product is sand-colored, the second image might appear yellow).
Issue with color change:
When a customer changes the product color using the dropdown menu on Shopify, only the first image updates correctly. The second image remains unchanged or displays the wrong color. In the attached images, the color was changed from sand to azalea.
Additional Details- I’m using the Spotlight theme, but I’m not sure if the issue is related to the theme or the integration between Gelato and Shopify.

It’s getting worse, not better! I have a sweatshirt with no design on it at all for all 7 colour options. I have also had other shirts with only one mockup added in one colour.
I have messaged them, but the answers never address the issue directly.
I’d first try to determine whether the issue is happening during the Gelato → Shopify sync or only when the images are rendered by the Spotlight theme.
Since the front image changes correctly when you switch from Sand to Azalea but the back image doesn’t, my first suspicion would be the variant-to-image association rather than the image files themselves.
I’d check one of the affected products directly in Shopify Admin and verify how the media is assigned to each variant. If Shopify itself isn’t receiving the images correctly, then Spotlight is probably just displaying what it has been given.
A quick way to narrow it down is to create a test product directly in Shopify with multiple images per color and see whether the issue still occurs. If it works correctly, that would point more toward the Gelato sync than the theme.
One thing I’ve seen some merchants do when they need a more controlled color-selection experience is use visual color/image swatches instead of relying entirely on the native variant gallery behavior. For example, with Easify Custom Product Options, each color choice can have its own image swatch and even link to a dedicated product if needed. That doesn’t fix a Gelato sync issue directly, but it can sometimes provide a cleaner customer experience when managing large numbers of color variations and images.
That said, I’d still investigate the variant image mapping first, because if the images aren’t being associated correctly inside Shopify, you’ll likely see the same issue regardless of which theme you’re using.
This may come from how product variants and images are mapped between Gelato and Shopify. I’d check the variant-to-image assignments in Shopify and test the product with the default theme to determine whether the issue comes from the integration or the Spotlight theme.
This one is almost always variant-to-image mapping on the Shopify side rather than the theme. When a POD app pushes a product, it assigns each variant one featured image. Your front mockups got mapped to the color variants, the back images got pushed as loose gallery images with no variant assignment, so the theme has nothing to swap them to when the color changes.
Quick way to confirm: Shopify admin, open the product, click a color variant and look at which image is attached. I’d bet the back image is attached to nothing or to one specific color only.
Fixes, in order of effort: manually assign both images per variant in the product editor (works, but re-syncing from the app can overwrite it), or check whether your app has a mockup-per-variant setting and select front and back for every color before syncing, or use a theme that supports grouping media by variant color. Testing on Dawn first is still good advice to rule the theme out, but from what you describe the mapping is the culprit.
