I keep trying to import a CSV file that I received from a wholesaler and it will not import into Shopify. I have tried multiple times. Its about 500 items. Any help will be appreciated!
Hi, @GoldHeartGroup
Welcome to Community!
Reviewing your screenshots, your CSV looks correct. It’s hard to say what the issue is without testing the file myself. If you’re comfortable sharing the file then I’d be happy to review it.
Few things I’d like to ask to help troubleshoot this.
-
Are you seeing this error as soon as you try to import the CSV or are you getting it in the email after the import has been completed?
-
Is the error indicating which (if any) lines could be causing the issue? (ie. rows 1-50 Couldn’t Be Updated Because The Handle Doesn’t Match Whats In Shopify)
-
Have you tested this with a smaller CSV file? (i.e copy and paste the first ten products into a new file, then try again, do you see the same error?)
Sometimes, the issue is with the formatting of the CSV. What you can also try, is copying and pasting the contents into a fresh CSV file via our template here. That may resolve the error without needing to run through the other troubleshooting questions.
We also have a few resources for troubleshooting CSV files here.
I am having the same issue with my test import. I get an email notification after the file tries to upload.
I selected “overwrite existing handles” on my import screen and it resolved!
Thanks for jumping in! Taking a look, your handles are formatted incorrectly.
Pulling from our help document:
This value is created based on the value in the Title column. For example, if the value in the Title column is Black Sun Glasses, then the value in this column is black-sun-glasses.
You’d need to add the dashes between each word in the handle column. With that, lines 6 & 7, 8 & 9, 10 & 11, 12 & 13 have the same handle. If this is one product then the formating is incorrect as you have values in columns that do not require it. I.e. Title and Option 1 Name do not need values if it’s a variant line.
After making those changes, the CSV imports successfully. I’ve added it for review.
Hi @Trevor
I’m getting the same error, even though I strictly follow the handle’s syntax.
Please see the attached image.
Also, Shopify is accepting rows 19 and 20.
Thanks & Regards

- Is that the full file or are there other rows?
- Do these products already exist in your admin, or are the net new products?
- Are you able to provide a copy of the file so I can test it?
- There are other rows too.
- Some of them exist.
- Sure.
Thanks for that! I wasn’t able to reproduce the “Couldn’t Be Updated Because The Handle Doesn’t Match Whats In Shopify” error with your CSV, which suggests your handles are correct.
However, from row 115 on, you’re missing “active” in the status column (the very last column). I would try fixing that and trying again. If you’re still getting the same error thereafter, let me know!
Hi @Trevor
I’m still getting the same issue with the same file.
Thanks for letting me know! Try copying the content of the current file and paste it onto a new sheet, then retry the import. If you are using Excel, we recommend using Google Sheets instead as this works best with Shopify.
If that doesn’t work, then I would recommend contacting Shopify Support. They can take a closer look at the account to determine where the issue is coming from.
