Keeping password protection on shopify while enable a subscription app

Alot of the subscription apps like bold dont allow you to password protect your shopify page. is there a way around this or an app that will allow password protection?

Hey, @TomBannister !

Julie here from Shopify Support.

I’d love to help you come up with a solution here! First off, it would be great to understand the use-case behind wanting to password protect your shop. Are you wanting your entire store to be password protected, or are you wanting this to apply only to specific pages or products?

I’ve chatted in with the Bold Support team and they have confirmed that it’s not possible to use Bold Subscriptions while your storefront password is enabled through Shopify. This is because Bold will not be able to access your shipping and checkout settings with your store being password protected.

Aside from Bold Subscriptions, Subscriptions by Recharge is another popular subscriptions app that you could consider using as an alternative. While it looks like they offer a feature to enter your storefront password in the app’s settings, allowing Recharge staff to access a locked store to assist with the setup, it’s not entirely clear if the app will work with the password enabled.

That being said, there is a popular app called Locksmith that gives merchants the ability to lock either their entire storefront or specific pages behind a password. In fact, it looks like this app offers a direct integration with Subscriptions by Recharge that allows you to lock content so that it can only be accessed by active subscribers. You can learn more about this integration here.

While the Bold Support team was not able to confirm whether or not this app would be compatible with their app, they have recommended testing it out. Based on the fact that customers can still checkout with this app enabled, I’m thinking it should work, but this would definitely be something worth testing with Locksmith’s 15-day free trial.

It would also be a good idea to contact the app developers directly, as they will be able to point you in the right direction and perhaps offer some further suggestions. When it comes to third-party apps, the developers will be able to offer full support as they know their apps inside and out!

I hope this provides you with a few options to consider. I’d also love to hear more about your business and why you are wanting to keep your storefront password enabled.

Looking forward to your response!
