Launching an online snack business: Is losing money initially normal?

Hello - we’re in the process of launching an online food snack business and have some questions that I’m hoping to get addressed by the larger Shopify community.

At first we’re launching w/ low order volumes to validate demand. Our financial model indicates that we’ll lose money when we initially launch because we don’t have preferential pricing from our suppliers given our low order volume.

My question to this community is to confirm if the approach we’re taking is the logical approach. It doesn’t seem right, but may be that’s how all business start. When you go-live, in the first 12 months, is your goal to make money, build your brand, confirm demand for your product? or do you always only go live if your financial model indicates that you’ll at least break even or make some money in the first year.

There is an opportunity to make good money in our business, but only if we invest large sums (1 million +).

Hoping to get others thoughts. Thanks in advance for your time.
