Limit one per customer (and NOT per checkout)

I have a item which I only want sold one per customer.
I tried minmaxify which works (customer can’t checkout with two items) but they can just complete the purchase for one item and then buy it again (ie minmaxify just limits the item being checked out)

Is there a way that it check the account history to see if they previously purchased it, and if so, they can’t purchase again?

Hey, @kerchief

An alternative solution to using a paid third-party app would be to use a discount code instead (set to a discount of 0%). This way you can have a discount URL and limit the discount usage to once per customer. The URL of a discount code is in the following format:

www.yoursite.com/discount/yourdiscountcode?redirect=/products/yourproduct

I was also able to find an alternative third-party app called Shopify Limit Qty Purchase by MageComp. This app allows you to limit the purchase by a customer. So that you can set up the Maximum Qty that can be purchased for a lifetime by the individual customer.

If there is anything else I can help you with, please let me know.

Amazing!

Thanks so much for your prompt reply.

Happy to help, @kerchief !

Have you been able to get Shopify LimitQyPurchase to work for customer purchase limits? I’m able to make it work for the Product and Category purchase limits within a transaction. But it wasn’t working for the customer purchase limits. I’ve created the trigger to Tag the customer and used that tag to set purchase limit to 1 in the app. However, the app is not limiting the customer purchase.

Do you need to change the URL of the product to the discount URL?

Hi Everyone :revolving_hearts:  I hope I’m not too late in replying to this.

You can use BOGOS: Free Gift Bundle Upsell app if you wanna run gift offers, since it allows you to limit the number of offer uses per logged-in customer.

There are also many other advanced targeting options that will be helpful in your use cases.

You’re looking to limit purchases across multiple orders, not just within a single checkout. That’s the difference between cart limits and customer purchase limits.

In DC Order Limits, you can use Customer Purchase Limits to cap how many times a customer can buy a specific product across their order history.

Setup:

  1. Create a Customer Purchase Limit rule

  2. Set max quantity to 1

  3. Select the product it applies to

  4. Save and activate

Once the limit is reached, the checkout will be blocked for that product for that customer.

For anyone finding this thread later, it helps to separate a cart limit from a customer limit.

Shopify’s native add-to-cart setting and most quantity-limit apps can restrict how many units appear in one cart. They don’t necessarily stop someone from completing the order, returning later and purchasing the product again.

For a genuine lifetime limit, you need to compare the current buyer with previous purchasers. Requiring account sign-in can make that easier, but it adds friction and doesn’t help if guest checkout needs to remain available.

Disclosure: I built OfferGuard for this problem. It can protect selected products by checking multiple identity signals at checkout, including email, phone and address, with stronger device and network signals available on higher plans. That lets it recognize likely returning buyers even during guest checkout.
