I am working with a client who sells limited edition photographs.
In short, there are only 30 pieces available per photograph (the main product) - independent of its variants/options:
Shopify only allows you to put in inventory levels per variant of the main product. How can I organize my product so that the main product (artwork) inventory of 30 is leading and independent of variants?

The Easify Inventory Sync app can easily resolve your issue 
. It lets you create an Inventory group that includes all variants of your main product and set a shared inventory level of 30.
This way, when a customer buys any variant, the inventory for all other variants will automatically update and stay in sync.
