This file serves as an AI sitemap, providing a clear, structured summary of your store’s products, collections, policies, and brand details for AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude.
Historically, Shopify made root-level file access difficult, requiring merchants to use third-party apps or workarounds to host this file. However, as of May 2026, Shopify natively supports agentic commerce by rolling out both an llms.txt file and an agentic discovery sitemap across its platform.
While Shopify generates this file automatically, your store’s AI visibility will still depend heavily on having clean product data, well-structured collections, and useful content

My read: put llms.txt near the bottom of your list.
It is a proposed convention. There is little evidence the major AI engines meaningfully read it today, and Shopify does not generate one for you. It is easy to treat it as progress when it is not.
What actually moves AI visibility is less exciting. Can the AI crawlers read your pages at all, which is your Front Door. And are your products and brand complete, machine readable entities.
A perfect llms.txt on a store with empty product schema does nothing. Fix the things the engines clearly use first. Revisit llms.txt the day they start honoring it.
