Located in United States but wanna sell to Australia

Hello everyone just as the Subject line says, I am located in the United States and am about to purchase a shopify store that is currently located and selling in Australia. I would like to know if there’s anything I should do beforehand to prepare for this? Taxes, Addresses, Laws, etc..

Thank you

Hi

You may need to collect sales tax here (GST). Check out this link for more information: https://www.ato.gov.au/Business/International-tax-for-business/In-detail/Doing-business-in-Australia/Australian-GST-registration-for-non-residents/

If you are not going to hit the AUD$75k sales threshold you shouldn’t need to worry about it initially.

Sam

Hi @kent370 ,

Really good question, this is something I recommend you speak to a local tax official or accountant about! They would know which taxes you’re most liable to be charging based on your location and business activity. While we can advise on how to set up your taxes in your store admin, we are by no means tax experts or can give tax advice. With that in mind, I can connect you to the guides Shopify has for setting up taxes for these locations so once you know for sure what you need to charge you know where to go for help to set it up correctly. I’m wondering if Location-based tax settings could come into play for you:

But I can’t stress enough to speak to a local tax authority so you’re 100% sure what you need to charge tax wise.
