Locating Code Paths? - Feature Suggestion

Topic summary

Main issue: A new Shopify user building two stores struggles to locate the exact theme files for specific sections/blocks when using the “Edit code” view. Browser Inspect (developer tools) doesn’t reliably reveal where a section/block is defined.

Request for guidance: Asks if there’s a more optimal/official way to find the “path” to a section or block within the theme backend (i.e., which file to open).

Feature suggestion: Proposes a button in the Theme Customize editor—“open code page for selected section/block”—that would open a new tab directly to the relevant code file for the currently selected section/block.

Context/terms: Sections/blocks are modular parts of Shopify themes edited via the visual Customize editor or the code editor; Inspect is the browser’s developer tools.

Status: No solution or decision provided yet; the question and feature request remain open.

Hello,

I am new here and I am in the process of building 2 stores. Many times I want to manually edit the code of a specific section or block in my theme but I find it very difficult to locate where exactly they sit within the “edit code” page. I am trying to find the section I want to edit via the inspect tool of my browser but I am not always succeeding.

Is there a more optimal way I can find the “path” to where a specific section/block sits within the backend of my theme? If not, I highly suggest to add this as a feature, maybe clicking a button at the top of the “customize” page - “open code page for selected section/block” that will open a separate tab, straight to the code for your selected section.

Thanks!
