Locked for 60 Days!

Topic summary

A user purchased a domain from a third party and transferred it to Shopify instead of their hosting provider first. They’re now facing a 60-day transfer lock and received conflicting information from Shopify support.

Key Technical Details:

  • The 60-day lock is an ICANN-mandated policy that applies across all domain registrars, not specific to Shopify
  • During this period, the domain cannot be transferred to another registrar

Proposed Solution:

  • Instead of transferring, update DNS settings (A records and CNAME) in Shopify’s domain settings to point to the hosting provider
  • This allows connecting the domain to another host while keeping it registered at Shopify

Current Status:

  • The user attempted to implement the DNS solution but reports it isn’t working
  • Their host denied the transfer attempt
  • A community member suggests identifying where the DNS records are currently housed, as access to those records is necessary to make the required changes

The discussion remains unresolved with the user still unable to properly connect their domain to their hosting provider.

Just a few days ago I purchased a url from a third party seller. I transferred it to Shopify when I actually should have transferred it to my host first. Shopify gave me 3 different answers with 3 different chats, this latest telling me it’s locked for 60 days and there is nothing I can do. How is this possible? Also, I was advised there are no supervisors or managers in Shopify and that this “specialists” answer was it.

Hey @SidelineTees I hope you are doing well.

The 60 day lock is a Standard domain transfer policy enforced by ICANN not Just Shopify. This rule applies to all domain registrars and prevent domain trnasfer within 60 days of a previous transfer.

Here is how you can take step:

If you need to connect your domain with another host then you don’t need to transfer it again. Instead you can follow these steps.

  • Go to Shopify Settings > Domains.
  • Edit DNS settings and A record & CNAME that pointing to hosting provider.

If you want to trnasfer the domain then unfortunately you have to wait for 60 days.

If this was helpful please like it and mark a Solution.

Thanks

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately while attempting tontransfer it to my host they denied it and there isnnonsecrionntonupdate those settings.

this gets super confusing between shopify “specialists” that give wrong answers and me a build from home business owner that relies on their advice. Ultimately I want the URL at Shopify, at least if I decide to stay with them at this point. But I need to add it to my host. So with that said, do I need to transfer it to my host then back to shopify?

Let me know how I can help you further?

No, you do not need to transfer the domain to your host and then back to Shopify. Instead, you can connect your domain to your host using DNS settings while keeping the domain registered on Shopify.

Unfortunately it isn’t working.

Shopify would be the host. the main question I have:

what company houses the DNS records? as long as you can access them you can make changes in order to point the records to Shopify, etc.
