We are from Across the Street, a children’s fashion outlet, and have been using Shopify for over 7 years and are quite pleased with the platform. However, we are still using a very old theme: Brooklyn. We have modified the theme to have a custom collection filter with infinitive scrolling, but are looking for an updated theme with preferable the same filter options. Our product catalog consists out of 5000+ products which can be filtered by vendors (brands), tags (types) and variants (sizes). Here is our collection page with the current filter system: Kids – Across the Street
Does anyone has a good suggestion for a theme with a similar filter system built-in? Important side notes: most of our users browse on mobile devices. Thanks!
Honestly for a 5000+ SKU catalog with multi-filter setup (vendor, tags, sizes) plus infinite scroll, no native theme is going to give you the exact same experience out of the box. Most modern themes have improved filtering via Shopify’s Search & Discovery app (free, by Shopify) which handles vendor, tag, and variant filtering natively, but the infinite scroll part is almost always something you have to add via custom code or an app.
Themes worth looking at for catalogs your size: Dawn or Horizon (both free by Shopify), Impulse, Prestige, or Be Yours (all premium, around $300-400 one time). Prestige especially handles large catalogs and filter heavy collection pages well, plus mobile performance is solid which matters since most of your users are on phones.
Real talk though, switching from a 7 year customized Brooklyn build to a new theme is a bigger project than it sounds. Your existing custom filter logic won’t carry over, and any other Brooklyn customizations (cart, product page tweaks, checkout) will need to be rebuilt or refactored for Online Store 2.0. Worth budgeting time for the migration properly rather than expecting plug and play. Happy to take a look at your current setup if you want a more specific recommendation, especially around what to preserve and what’s worth rebuilding cleanly.
@Moeed kind of summarized everything in a single post. For filters Shopify search and discovery app is the best from Shopify to build custom filters, it’s free and by Shopify which is a plus. Infinite scroll in my experience as well is something for the most theme has to be rebuilt but there are themes that have adapted to infinite scrolling and it has been some time. Isn’t it @Moeed
Anyway, you have some pointers and I wish you best with the implementation @AcrossTheStreet
Wait a second – Horizon family has infinite scrolling out of the box.
Horizon family has 10 themes in theme store, but in fact – it’s the same theme with different base settings (so there is no need to select among them – you can use any).
As for the filtering – you need to install a “Search and Discovery” app in your store (it would not affect your live theme) and one of the themes which support it (as mentioned, Dawn and Horizon do and any theme from the theme store should) so you can get an idea of what it is like to configure and use.
You will get a much more flexible filtering with this – would be able to add more fields, for example.
It may be necessary to migrate some of your data to fully use new capabilities, but bulk edit and some automation tools like Flow can help here.
And of course, Dawn and any Shopify 2.0 theme will give you much more flexibility in configuring your site – every page.
Horizon (with block-based architecture) takes this even further – say, you will be able to change layout of your product cards without coding.
Not sure whether any paid theme supports block-based architecture yet though.
Possible drawback – Horizon is less compatible with old devices.
