Hi everyone,
our store is facing an issue which Shopify doesn’t handle well natively - Australian GST especially in regards to low value goods.
In short, we need to charge the tax on orders below 1000 AUD and not to charge them on orders above 1000 AUD as it will be dealt by customs.
Shopify support couldn’t help me, is there maybe a third party solution?
Hi @BobbyMacCheese This is a well-known gap in Shopify’s native tax handling for Australian LVG rules. A few options that work:
1. Avalara (AvaTax)
Best third-party solution for this exact scenario. It handles Australian GST LVG threshold logic automatically — charges GST on orders under 1000 AUD and exempts orders above it. Integrates directly with Shopify.
2. Quaderno
Another solid option for threshold-based tax rules across markets, including Australian GST LVG compliance.
3. Manual workaround via Shopify Markets + Scripts (Shopify Plus only)
If you’re on Shopify Plus, you can use Shopify Functions to create custom tax logic that applies/removes GST based on cart total crossing the 1000 AUD threshold.
4. Sufio or TaxJar
Less ideal for this specific LVG rule but worth evaluating if you need broader international tax compliance.
For most stores not on Plus, Avalara is the most reliable and widely used solution for exactly this Australian LVG GST requirement.
@BobbyMacCheese ,
Shopifys native tax settings are fairly limited for this type of conditional GST logic. If you need GST applied only to orders under AUD 1,000 and excluded above that threshold you will likely need a thirdparty tax app or a custom Shopify Function if you are on Shopify Plus. I have seen merchants use services like Avalara or Vertex for more advanced tax rules but a custom solution may be the most flexible depending on your setup. It might be worth speaking with a Shopify developer whos handled Australian cross border tax requirements before.
Hey @BobbyMacCheese ,
As far as I know Shopify’s native tax settings don’t support applying GST based on an order value threshold like the Australian low value imported goods rules.
You may want to look at tax automation apps such as Avalara or Vertex, as they can handle more complex tax scenarios depending on your setup. Another option is a custom Shopify app or Shopify Functions (if you’re on a plan that supports them) although that would require some development work.
I’m interested to hear what other Australian merchants are using for this as it seems like a fairly common compliance requirement.
Thank You !
