Looking for app to replace the “Hide other variant media after one is selected” button" which doesn’t work in Dawn theme. Please help!
Hi @ellynj ![]()
Try a new copy of the theme in case your current one is broken.
Probably should contact a support advisor and seeing if you have any courtesy-design-time that can be applied towards fixing this.
There’s also just searching the forums to see if there’s any pre-existing fixes not needing apps.
Otherwise if you need theme repair services click my profile pic for info to get started.
Thanks for your reply. I’ve looked for a solution in the forum, and it seems like everyone else has the same problem. I might try the support advisor and see about that. My site is only an affiliate site but I want my customers to have all info before they click out and not to be too confused why there are so many images of shirts! Thanks again. Ellyn
Hi Ellyn
One thing that trips most people up with this setting: it only works if your images are actually assigned to variants in the product admin - not just sitting loose in the gallery.
So the checklist is:
- Products → your product → click each image → assign it to the matching variant (colour/size, etc.)
- Then in Customize → your product template → Product information, tick “Hide other variants’ media after selecting a variant.”
If the images aren’t tied to variants, Dawn has nothing to match against, so it just shows all of them - which looks exactly like the setting is broken even though it’s technically “working.”
Since you mentioned it’s an affiliate site: if your products don’t have real variants set up (just images pulled in), that’s probably the actual blocker rather than the theme. In that case, a quick no-code workaround is to set each image’s alt text to match the variant name - Dawn can use that to filter them.
And as Paul said, if you’ve confirmed the assignments and it still misbehaves, duplicating the theme to a fresh copy is worth trying before paying for a fix.
Hmm.
The setting works exactly as expected in my fresh copy of Dawn.
If setting is unchecked, all product media is shown;
if checked, theme will remove all images assigned to variants other than currently selected and keep image assigned to current variant and all images which are not linked to variants.
Maybe people who have the problem expecting something else?
What do you expect this setting to do?
Note that technically, Shopify allows no more than one image per variant. Several variants may share the same image.
Hey, if Dawn continues to bug out, when my theme didnt offer image filtering based on selected variant I tried the appstore. i have pretty much used every single one thats out there and ended up landing on variantlens cos it isnt bloated. hope this helps
