I just tried Discount Pop Up MITS and realized there may be other apps that provide better options. Are there any popular/well rated apps the provide advanced settings like using cookies to make sure only new users get discount, auto generate discount codes, first order discounts, time limit with onscreen countdown, etc? I’m so new to this I’m not sure what is out there and available, but spent a few hours looking at apps and was then disappointed with what I chose.
Any help with actual apps or research resources is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Hi @WineLife
If your goal is to target new vs returning customers and still offer flexible incentives, you might want to look beyond pop-ups and consider a loyalty + rewards approach. Apps like iWeb Loyalty Rewards let you:
-
Turn first-time and guest shoppers into repeat buyers using points & rewards
-
Offer discounts, free shipping, or free products instead of one-time codes
-
Control who can access rewards (e.g. new customers only or specific segments)
-
Convert loyalty points into store credit (even in multi-currency)
-
Combine rewards with discounts to boost AOV
This gives you more long-term control than simple discount popups and avoids over-discounting, and moreover, this app is completely free to use, so if you want to explore it, you can give it a try if it fulfils your needs. Hope this helps and gives you a clearer direction! ![]()
Hi, There are many apps which can help fulfull like Privy or OptiMonk for this purpose.
Rethink Your Discount Strategy:
-
Pop-ups are interruptive - They often hurt user experience and can lower conversion rates if not done carefully
-
Cart abandonment is where the real opportunity is - 70% of people add to cart but don’t complete purchase
-
Focus on the buying journey rather than just the entry point
1. Slide-Out Cart Drawers (Game Changer)
-
Show real-time progress toward discount thresholds (“Add $15 more for 10% off!”)
-
Display urgency without being pushy (“Cart reserved for 10 minutes”)
-
Upsell complementary items right in the drawer
-
Apply tiered discounts automatically as cart value increases
-
Reduces friction - customers don’t leave product pages
2. Cookie-Based Personalization (What You Asked For)
-
Show different cart experiences for new vs returning visitors
-
New visitors: “Welcome! Here’s 10% off your first order”
-
Returning visitors: “Welcome back! Free shipping on orders $50+”
-
Track behavior, not just visits - cart abandoners get different messaging
Countdown Timers That Actually Work
-
Place them in the cart drawer, not pop-ups (less annoying, more effective)
-
Use session-based timers tied to actual cart reservations
-
“Your cart is reserved for 8:47” feels more authentic than “SALE ENDS IN 5 MINUTES”
Instead of aggressive pop-ups, use:
- Slide cart with progress bars toward discount tiers
- Sticky announcement bar for site-wide offers (non-intrusive)
- Exit-intent overlay as last-resort for abandoners
- Post-purchase upsells to maximize customer value
Hi,
We have a Popup app at Elfsight. You can find our app in Shopify App Store.
Or simply visit our website for more details.
I won’t claim it covers 100% of your request, but it has triggers, a flexible schedule of display + time limits, a coupon field with the autogeneration option. Also, other features that you didn’t mention: embedding of multimedia, links, and forms
So, it can be worth checking for your use case.
Best,
Elfsight Team
I ended up buying a theme that supports popups. Thanks for the rreplies.
