Looking for honest advice on email marketing tools for small Shopify stores

Hi everyone,
I run a small Shopify store and I’m setting up email marketing for the first time.

I tried Klaviyo and Mailchimp, but both feel a bit too complex for my needs.

For those of you who already send emails — which tool do you use, and is it easy to manage?

I’d really appreciate some real feedback from store owners who’ve tried different options.

You have chosen the right app which is Klaviyo and Mailchimp, do you have any problem with it using it.

Anything you think I can enlighten you on.

Which app are you using for the email marketing setup?

Honestly Klaviyo is wonderful for most things. What do you need help about?

Hello @Kevin0952 ,

I hope you are well!

I want to inform you that AiTrillion can help the small business like you with providing 16 different tools under one plan with small fees.

I want to inform you that AiTrillion provides 1500/Month Emails which can be used for Email and Flows which can be helpful for small stores.

You can also block customers or mark the customers as inacitve or suppress the customers so that you won’t be billed for some specific customer which you don’t want to engage.

I totally get what you mean. Tools like Klaviyo and Mailchimp are super powerful, but they can feel heavy when you’re just getting started.

Full transparency: I’m the founder of CartSaver, so I’m a bit biased. We built the app specifically for store owners who want something simpler. Instead of tons of menus and settings, it focuses on sending personalized messages (including short video emails) without the technical headache. It can generate personalized videos for abandoned carts, show high converting popups etc.

If you’re looking for something lightweight and beginner-friendly, it might be worth a look.

I like Mailchimp and Klaviyo, but if you look for something simpler, Shopify Email is the easiest place to start. It integrates natively with your store, is beginner-friendly, and includes 10,000 free emails per month. The templates are clean, and you can set up basic flows like abandoned cart and welcome series. It just doesn’t offer advanced features like deep segmentation or complex automations.

Another solid option is Omnisend. It handles email, SMS, and push in one platform, with simple setup and affordable plans.

If klaviyo and Mailchimp feel too tricky, you can use simpler tools like Omnisend, MailerLite, Seguno or SmartrMail. They are easy to use, work well with shopify and perfect for small stores.

For small Shopify stores setting up email marketing for the first time, Klaviyo isn’t really necessary, and many beginners find it more complex than they need.

Klaviyo is the most widely used and very powerful tool, but it often requires building flows, writing email copy, managing templates, and connecting integrations, which can feel overwhelming at an early stage. Mailchimp can feel similar once you move beyond basic newsletters.

Beginner-friendly alternatives include Omnisend, Brevo, and MailerLite. These are generally easier to manage than Klaviyo, but they still involve manual setup and ongoing campaign work.

EmailWish is one of the most beginner-friendly options because emails and automations are automatically customized for your store’s branding without you having to write email copy, upload templates, or connect multiple tools. It includes email, popups, chat, forms, reviews, and wishlists in one place, reducing the need for extra apps.

Because all of these features live in a single system, EmailWish has more behavioral signals to personalize messaging across the customer journey. This allows deep customization while still being easy to start with, and more advanced controls are available as the store grows.

For small stores, the key difference is usually how much setup and ongoing management you want versus how quickly you want email marketing to start working.

I recently launch a email marketing with Mr expert, he used getresponse and it iwas very easy to navigate.

@Kevin0952 Thanks for reaching out to Shopify community with your concern. My personal favorite is Klaviyo, it might feel a bit heavy at first but as soon as you get hang of it you will love it.

  • Other than that, Omnisend works really well and is easier to manage than Klaviyo, but still supports welcome and abandoned cart flows.
  • If Klaviyo and Mailchimp feel too heavy, try MailerLite or Brevo — they’re cheaper and simpler too.

hiya, mailerlite is a great beginner friendly option for ecom. I handled the email marketing for a small startup with around 2k subscribers from 2 years of on/off work. they were very social in person, so grew their list that way. mailerlite has all the functions you need for essential and lifecycle email marketing (automations and campaigns) and the editor is very easy to use. you can test emails just fine as well. fairly intuitive to use. i moved that brand i mentioned out of mailerlite when they grew enough to require more advanced segmentations (i did an analysis of the available options and in the end migrated everything over the klaviyo using the features available)

Honestly, a lot of small store owners feel the same way about Klaviyo and Mailchimp as they’re powerful, but they can feel like overkill when you’re just getting started. If your goal right now is simply to build your list and send clean, consistent emails, it’s totally fine to keep things simple.

What I’ve seen work well for smaller stores is focusing first on growing and keeping engaged subscribers. That’s where tools like Wheelify Spin Wheel Email Pop and Cartly Abandoned Cart Recovery come in handy.

Wheelify helps you capture more emails with a fun spin-to-win popup (much more engaging than a basic form), and Cartly automatically follows up with shoppers who leave, so your subscriber list stays active and you recover otherwise lost sales.

You can still use any simple email platform you like, but pairing it with tools that actually grow and retain subscribers usually makes email marketing feel much more manageable early on.

Hi Kevin0952

Totally understand how you feel — both Klaviyo and Mailchimp can seem overwhelming at first, especially when you’re just getting started.

If you’re running a small Shopify store, here’s a simple breakdown:

  • Shopify Email – Very beginner-friendly and built directly into Shopify. It’s great if you just want to send basic campaigns and simple automations without too much setup.

  • Klaviyo – More powerful, especially for segmentation and automated flows, but it has a learning curve. It’s ideal if you plan to grow and want advanced features later.

  • Mailchimp – Good for general email marketing, but the Shopify integration isn’t always as smooth as native tools.

I’m not a store owner, I work for an app-integrated company and partner with ESP systems - Claspo Popup app. So can share a generalised experience and feedback from our customers, that are about a simple ESP and cheaper costs.

Consider: Sender (very adequate for small merchants), Wiz AI (headless tool if you don’t have time or expertise), Omnisend (pretty mature but cheaper then klaviyo),

For folks who’ve moved off Mailchimp (or are mid-switch): what actually scared you most about the switch? And when you went looking for help with that part, did you find anyone who could do it, or did you end up doing it yourself?

Hi Kevin,

If Klaviyo and Mailchimp feel too overwhelming for a small store, you should definitely try Shopify Email. It’s built right into your Shopify admin, so you don’t have to connect any third-party apps or deal with complex syncing.

The drag-and-drop editor is very straightforward, and it pulls your products and branding directly into the emails. Plus, it’s free for up to 10,000 emails per month, which is perfect for starting out.

Give it a shot, it’s much easier to manage than the big platforms!
