Looking for underserved app opportunities — what's missing from the App Store?

Hey community :waving_hand:

I’m a solo developer scoping out my next Shopify app build and I want to avoid reinventing the wheel. Before I commit to a direction, I’d love to hear directly from merchants and other developers:

What’s genuinely missing or broken in the Shopify App Store right now?

Specifically I’m looking for:

  • Workflows you’ve cobbled together with workarounds because no app does it cleanly
  • Features you’ve requested from existing apps that never got built
  • Niches that feel underserved — specific business types (wholesale, subscriptions, POD, etc.), regions, or compliance requirements that popular apps don’t handle well
  • Apps you’ve churned from because they were close but not quite right — what was missing?

I’m not looking for “build another reviews app” suggestions — I want the gaps that aren’t obvious from browsing the store.

Honest answers only — if a space is already dominated, I’d rather know upfront than waste months building into it.

Thanks in advance :folded_hands:

Focus on the gaps between apps rather than another standalone feature. Merchants often rely on spreadsheets, Shopify Flow, and custom scripts to connect workflows that existing apps don’t handle cleanly. Those repetitive workarounds are usually where the best app opportunities are.

Hi @chloemak
One area I still see merchants struggling with is customer communication around orders.

There are apps for tracking, notifications, WhatsApp, etc., but merchants often still end up stitching different tools together for confirmations, tracking updates, exceptions, and follow-ups.

A lightweight solution that brings these workflows together without becoming an all-in-one app could be useful, especially for smaller merchants.

I think the gaps between existing apps are definitely worth exploring.
