I’m in the Automotive industry and i use shopify to distribute parts. Currently our business loses tons of money on shopify just not charging customers anywhere near enough for shipping. We might sell someone a set of exterior crash bars for their car that only weigh 15 lbs, they’re just steel pipes welded together, but the bar is like 4 or 5 feet long. Shopify will charge my customer like $20 to ship that when realistically it should be incurring a freight charge or some sort of oversized shipping.
We also often run into the opposite issue where someone will purchase a very small item from us and shopify will charge them so much on shipping that they don’t want to purchase it.
When creating a product listing on shopify it seems absolutely insane that there is no sizing, and it calculates the shipping entirely on weight. Something like a brake caliper is small but very dense, and something like a lightweight plexiglass window is only a few pounds but massive.
On top of this, about half of our products are not stocked in our brick and mortar store, but are distributed from larger vendors. This means that we can’t use a shipping app like Boxify that assumes all products will be shipped as efficiently as possible into a single box because a lot of the time only some of the order is going to come from us.
If there are any apps or store configuration settings that can remedy this problem our business would make great use of them.
