Unfortunately as far as I am aware, Shopify does not provide any native way to collect a phone number of other information on the default registration form. However, you can certainly accomplish this using an app such as Helium Customer Fields. The app will allow you to create a completely custom registration form to collect info like phone number, address, and more, and also allows you set up validation rules such as requiring a certain field.

Yes, there is no native way but it is possible to validate with Javascript.
