I’m struggling with inventory management for a product that offers 2 frame types and 22 different fabric options in my Shopify store. Each combination (frame + fabric) is a separate variant, totaling 44 variants. However, I have only 20 physical frames in stock, while fabrics are simple add-ons.
The problem:
When a customer orders a variant (say, Frame A + Fabric 1), Shopify only reduces inventory for that specific variant. I need Shopify to also reduce stock for all variants that use the same frame (e.g., Frame A + Fabric 2, Frame A + Fabric 3, etc.), because all these variants physically share the same frame.
I’m on the Basic Shopify plan, so I can’t automate this with advanced workflows or custom apps. Has anyone solved this type of inventory issue on the Basic plan? Any clever workarounds, manual methods, or app recommendations (if possible for Basic) would be appreciated.
It sound like you actually selling 2 different items as one item where it would make more sense if you would sell them separately with bundling option. So in backend frame and fabric should be different products. Each product may have their variants also. I am not sure but maybe you can try this setup with free Shopify Bundle app?
It sounds like the problem I also faced with my store. I sell perfumes in different quantities like 5 ml, 10 ml, and 20 ml, and I wanted it to get deducted from the same master stock because it’s really just one big bottle I pour from. Shopify, by default, only reduced stock for the exact variant sold, which made things messy.
I ended up using Sumtracker to link all those quantity variants together. Now, whenever someone buys a 5 ml bottle, the total stock goes down correctly, and it automatically updates the other variants too. Saved me a lot of manual edits and overselling issues.
Yep, Sumtracker works great for this kind of problem. I use it too and it’s perfect for syncing inventory of multiple listings. All my linked variants stay in sync automatically, which saves me a lot of time.
Thank you for sharing your detailed use case. I completely understand what you’re looking to achieve. You can try out the Inventory Sync ‑ GoGo app. This app is quite good for syncing duplicate variants. Just make sure that all the variants have the same SKU value. Once the automation is set up, the app will identify the duplicates and update the inventory in real time.
If you’re open to using an app, I’d recommend Easify Product Options. It’s super easy to use — you can create your frame variants directly in Shopify to manage your 20-frame inventory as usual, and then use Easify to add fabric color options without linking them to stock.
These fabric options won’t affect your inventory, so you can offer as many as you want without limits. Plus, it lets you display them beautifully on your product page with zero hassle.
