Marking fraud customers in shopify

Hi There,

I have a shopify store and many at times the customers placing COD orders deny to accept the orders when it is sent to the them. These customers just make excuses that they are outside or not able to receive the shipment.

I want to mark the customers with some tag etc (i.e fraud) so that when next time they place any order I can identify that the customer from the order itself and then take necessary action.

In conclusion I want to mark the customers in shopify so that it can be identified if the same customer places an order next time in future (from the order itself)

How can this be done?

To address fraud customers in Shopify, you can take several steps to identify and mark them. Here are some recommendations:

  1. Fraud Analysis Apps: Install fraud analysis apps from the Shopify App Store, such as FraudLabs Pro, Signifyd, or Riskified. These apps use advanced algorithms and data analysis to help identify potential fraudulent orders and customers.

  2. Order Review: Review each order carefully before fulfilling it. Look for red flags such as high-value orders from new customers, multiple orders with different billing and shipping addresses, or unusual purchasing patterns. Consider using fraud detection services integrated with Shopify, such as Shopify Fraud Protect.

  3. Use IP Geolocation: Check the IP geolocation of the customer’s order to verify if it matches the billing and shipping addresses provided. If there are significant discrepancies or the IP address is associated with known fraudulent activity, it may indicate a potential fraud attempt.

  4. Payment Verification: Verify the payment details provided by the customer. Ensure the billing address matches the one associated with the payment method, and consider using tools like Shopify’s Fraud Filter to identify suspicious payment transactions.

  5. Communicate with Customers: Reach out to customers if you have any doubts or suspicions about their orders. Request additional verification, such as photo identification or proof of address, for high-risk orders.

  6. Manual Flagging: Create an internal system or use apps to flag customers who have been identified as fraudulent or suspicious in the past. This can help you track and prevent future orders from these customers.

  7. Report to Authorities: If you encounter clear instances of fraud, consider reporting them to the appropriate authorities, such as local law enforcement or online fraud reporting agencies.

Hi @biocule

Jason here with Beacon fraud protection.

To mark a customer, you can just add a custom tag to the customer page like the screenshot below.

That way, if the customer tries to place a new order, the tag will still be there. If you have one of the higher tier Shopify plans, you can even download Shopify flow to automatically cancel these orders based on the existing fraud tags.

Does this help you answer your question?

@davidoliver Thanks a lot for detail explanation!!

@Beacon-Jason Thanks a lot the help and explanation!

Hi there @biocule !

I can see you’ve already gotten some input on this from the Community, that’s great!

I was going to suggest that you look at the range of fraud-blocking apps in our app store to see if there’s one that might suit your specific needs.

I can see FraudBlock Fraud Prevention has some good reviews as well as a free trial and free plan available so you can check it out.

There’s also our own Fraud Filter app here you can check out, as well as its help doc here so you can learn how it works.

Would you have some sort of customer verification in place for COD orders or can you tell me a bit more about how you handle these types of order?

Okay it can be done using PayRules: Hide Payment Methods app. Firstly, let’s assume you tagged a customer with fraud already if that particular customer denied a COD order before. Now here are the steps you need to follow to block him from the COD option for the future orders:

  1. Choose Cash on Delivery from the Select payment methods field.
  2. Write fraud in the Customer tags field like the screenshot below.

Now any fraud tagged customers cannot see the COD option in the checkout page anymore. Hope it helps. Thanks.
