Hi everyone,
I just received an order that was flagged as medium fraud risk. The customer paid with PayPal and is already authorized by PayPal. Here are the main issues:
- Card Verification Value (CVV) isn’t available
- Billing address or credit card address wasn’t available
- Billing address ZIP or postal code doesn’t match the credit card’s registered address
- A payment method other than a credit card was used
I logged into my PayPal account to check for more details about the customer, but I couldn’t find any card information.
Is it common for PayPal payments to trigger these kinds of fraud alerts?
Thanks a lot for your input!
Hi @Annajohn
This is very very simple question merchants need to ask themselves for any orders:
Can you afford to lose the money from this transaction?
I really wish the fraud services would just put this type of message in the UI.
The need to make a sale is a good way to get scammed into having no sale at all.
Regardless of what a payment service X may or may not do.
For the specifics of third party payment gateway’s policies see that third parties support, docs , or forums.
Hot take: for paypal a common sentiment you can search online for these situations is paypal can refund an order, let the scammer keep the item and also action the merchants account. It probably helps to have a longstanding transaction history with paypal to minimize this stuff but it’s still someone elses sandbox. Do research for merchant stories online for these scenarios.
