Merchants -- What are your thoughts on Marketplaces and/or Search Engines for shop discovery?

Shopify merchants - what opportunities or concerns do you see with a “marketplace / search engine for Shopify shops”? How could this help you with your shops, and how would/could you take advantage of such platforms (real or theoretical)?

As one example, in terms of customer acquisition, driving traffic, and brand discovery, what does the Shop App by Shopify do well? What does Shop not do well? I’ve seen some threads of merchants talking about commodification because the platform shows products and prices next to each other. Is there similar concerns if the platform shows brands and store pages rather than individual products as the main “search result”?

Context: I am building out a search engine for Shopify shops (in MVP stage) with the dual goal of (1) helping customers find awesome independent online brands to buy from, and (2) providing merchants brand visibility. Please let me know if I’m not being clear enough!
