We absolutely need this feature. Also applies for automated collections as you can not make one from metaobjects.
Topic summary
Users are requesting the ability to use metaobjects as filters in Shopify’s native Search & Discovery app. While metafields can currently serve as filters, metaobjects—despite being a highly anticipated 2023 feature—are not supported for this purpose.
Current Status:
- Shopify documentation confirms metaobjects are not supported as filters
- Only specific metafield value types (single line text, decimal, integer, true/false) work as filters
- Metaobjects also cannot be used for automated collections
Community Response:
- Multiple merchants (+1 votes throughout) express strong need for this functionality
- Use cases include filtering by ingredients, specifications, and product features
- One user reports (post #24) that metafields within metaobjects may now be filterable, though a 100-option display limit exists—problematic for stores with 150+ filter values
Workarounds:
- Third-party apps like AI Search & Product Filter and Searchanise claim to support metaobject filtering with higher limits (up to 20,000 values)
- Some merchants reverted to manual tagging instead
Resolution: The issue remains largely unresolved in the native app, with merchants hoping Shopify adds this to their roadmap.
