Misleading description in Checkout UI Extensions about Order Summary target

Topic summary

Issue: Documentation for Checkout UI Extensions uses the term “steps” (information, shipping, payment) in a way that suggests Order Summary and Shop Pay are separate and available to non–Shopify Plus stores, but in practice Order Summary also requires Shopify Plus.

Context: “Targets/locations” are specific UI placement points within checkout (e.g., Information, Shipping, Payment, Order Summary). Shopify Plus is a higher-tier plan that unlocks checkout customization, including all checkout locations.

Problem: The docs imply only the three steps need Plus, while Order Summary appears listed separately, leading developers to believe it’s available on non-Plus. The user reports you cannot place extensions in any Checkout location without Plus; only Thank You and Order Status locations work on non-Plus.

Latest responses: A Shopify staff member asks if explicitly labeling what’s available on non-Plus vs Plus would clarify.

Suggested fixes:

  • Replace “steps” with “Checkout locations” and link to them.
  • Add “Only for Shopify Plus” badges next to “Checkout locations” in the overview.

Hey there,

We was developing Shopify Checkout UI extension and run into bad spot cuz I of really weird and misleading text in the docs. Here it states “Checkout UI extensions for the information, shipping and payment STEP are available only to stores on a Shopify Plus plan”. Which already leads to question “what is a step?”. I was trying to find more clear explanation so I went to “Targets Overview” section. Where it says “Checkout consists of the information, shipping, and payment steps in addition to the order summary and Shop Pay”. Which means that order summary and shop pay are separated from this steps and should work not only in Shopify Plus. Moreover, in targets list you see one after another “Information->Shipping->Payment->Order Summary” which kinda confirms the thoughts, Order Summary feels like 4th step or at least not related to the given three steps. But it is simply not like that, you cant put extension in Order Summary unless it is Shopify Plus.

In fact, it is more correctly to say that you cant put extension in any of “Checkout location” and you can put only in “Thank You locations”, “Order status location”, etc.

Hi - thanks for flagging this feedback, would it be easier to understand if in the area marked below we explicitly say what is available on non-Plus stores vs Plus stores?

Yep, it surely sounds better. Or maybe even change the wording and instead of “steps” say “all Checkout locations only to stores on…” and put a link to them

Also you may try to put some sort of badge or simply mention it in locations overview:

Here you have 3 of them: “Checkout”, “Thank You” and “Order status”. And in fact, all “Checkout locations” require Shopify Plus while right now it says only “Information”, “Shipping” and “Payment” steps. So basically even putting an “only for Shopify Plus” badge next to “Checkout locations” heading would already help a lot.
