Mixed carts w products from local stores and warehouse

We are a NGO with an established an online thrift store. However, we have some limitations and issues that I would like to ask if you can help us move forward with. Below are the setup and scenarios:

Platform: Shopify Plus

Stores and locations: 1 x main main warehouse – 13 locations/stores

Shipping platform: Webshipper App (3rd part shipping platform) providing the prices

Current setup:

We have one main warehouse and 13 active stores/locations (in Shopify). Most of the products in the online Thrift shop are located in the warehouse. The products handled at the warehouse are exclusively from the category: Clothing.

The stores supplement the assortment in the Thrift shop with products from their own range/stock, so the products online are a mix of products from the warehouse and our stores. The physical stores have products from the product categories: Clothing and Interior.

Order handling:

At the main warehouse, volunteers handle online orders and ensure they are dispatched.

In the physical stores, orders are handled by volunteers and made ready for pickup in the stores.

Current limitations:

Right now is only possible to place and dispatch orders with items located at the main warehouse. This means that all items in the cart must be from the main warehouse to dispatch the order.

Furthermore, there is a limitation in that you cannot mix the cart. This means that you cannot check out with items from both a store and the main warehouse – an error message will appear in the cart.

So, with the current setup, it is not possible to ‘mix’ orders with products from multiple locations and check out with them. The items must come from the same store.

Example of challenging scenarios:

Example 1: Customer wants to buy a Top (Clothing category) from our warehouse and a Hat (Clothing category) located in our Egae store. When trying to proceed to check out, they receive an error message: “You have items from multiple stores in your cart. To proceed to payment, please ensure that you only purchase items from one store at a time.”

Example 2: Customer wants to buy a table (Interior category) for pick up from the Bellinge store and a dress (Clothing category) from our warehouse for shipping. The customer cannot proceed to checkout and receives an error.

Example 3: Customer wants to buy a bookshelf from our store in Soroe and a sofa from Holstebro (both from the Interior category and both for pick up) but cannot proceed to checkout.

Example 4: Customer wants to buy a sweater (Clothing category) and a chair (Interior category) both from the Soroe store. The customer wants to be able to either ship or choose pick up for the sweater and choose pickup for the chair. The customer cannot check out with these items, and the cart fails.

Dream scenarios:

Example 1: Customer wants to buy a Top (Clothing category) from our warehouse and a Hat (Clothing category) located in our Egae store. When trying to proceed to check out, they receive an error message.

Solution: The customer now receives the top from the warehouse and has the option to either have the hat sent to them or pick it up at the Egae store. If both pieces of clothing are located in stores, it would be possible to have them sent or choose pickup for each of them.

Important: It should be possible to remove double billing of shipping cost

Example 2: Customer wants to buy a table (Interior category) for pick up from the Bellinge store and a dress (Clothing category) from our warehouse for shipping. The customer cannot proceed to checkout and receives an error.

Solution: The customer receives the dress from the warehouse and now has the option to pick up the table at the Egae store.

Example 3: Customer wants to buy a bookshelf from our store in Soroe and a sofa from Holstebro (both from the Interior category and both for pick up) but cannot proceed to checkout.

Solution: The customer can check out with pickup at the two stores.

Example 4: Customer wants to buy a sweater (Clothing category) and a chair (Interior category) both from the Soroe store. The customer cannot check out with these items, and the cart fails.

Solution: The customer wants to be able to either ship or choose pick up for the sweater and choose pickup for the chair.

I hope you can help us.

Hey @ElisabethRC

How you broke that down was amazing and really sheds light on your shipping limitations.

What you mentioned about the inability to have mixed carts can’t happen on Shopify alone. This will need to be done with the use of a 3rd party rate provider.

With Intuitive Shipping, you can build scenarios (think of them as profiles in Shopify). This can be product-specific with a Shipping Method (shipping rates that appear at checkout) that can blend with other Scenarios. You can have it blend in such a way that the customer can have items shipped and picked up from other locations. You can have it mix and match as much as you need.

The app automatically downloads into a free Sandbox version where you can test for however long you need, along with app support (highly recommended to utilize support).

When using a 3rd party rate-provider, there may be an extra cost associated as Shopify requires Third Party Calculated Rates to be enabled. This is only available to plan levels Shopify and higher. If you are Shopify Plan level and paying your subscription monthly, the cost associated is $20/mnth. If you pay your subscription yearly, or on any higher plan, this service is included.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask, as we are an open book about what our app can and cannot do.

Thanks,

Chelsey

Hi @ElisabethRC ,

Thanks for being part of the Shopify community! You wrote an amazing, very explicit post and I appreciate that you took the time to communicate your needs clearly.

Orders can be split to fulfil from multiple locations. Also, Shopify recently introduced Order Routing which allows you to set up specific rules for each one of your scenarios.

Customers should be able to buy products based in different warehouses as long as you set up your store accordingly. More details are shared by Shopify in their Help Center:

This might be overwhelming at first, especially because some of these features have been recently introduced to the Shopify ecosystem. As a Shopify Partner, I am happy to support your initiative and help with the right set-up of the feature if you’re seeking this kind of assistance. I hope my message helped, and do not hesitate to reach out if you need specialized support.

Thanks.

Hi @ElisabethRC ,

The issue of selecting two product from different category or location can be solved using custom dev in the theme.

Request you to refer the below video for functionality and implementation logic.

Let me know if you have any specific question about this.
