Monthly subscription with prepaid tokens / points

Hello everyone,

I’m a new Shopify user and I’m currently evaluating whether it’s the right platform for my website.

I need to develop a website that allows users to subscribe to one of three monthly plans (Starter, Standard, Plus).

Each subscription provides a set amount of tokens/points per month (Starter = 80 tokens/month, Standard = 160 tokens/month, Plus = 240 tokens/month), which users can use each month to purchase photos or digital content on the site, with each item costing a variable number of tokens (e.g., Photo A = 60 tokens, Audio B = 80 tokens…).

Are there any Shopify apps/extensions that allow this functionality?

Yes, it is possible to build this on Shopify. However, the core functionality you’re asking for, subscriptions with monthly token/credit allowances that can be redeemed for digital goods, will require a combination of apps and/or custom development. This is because Shopify does not natively support credit/token systems.

Please confirm that you need following Scope of Work:

  • Subscription Plans (Starter, Standard, Plus)
  • Monthly Token Allotments
  • Token Deduction System for Digital Purchases
  • Content Access Control (digital content unlockable via tokens)

First of all, thank you for your support!
Everything you mentioned is correct, except for the part about digital content — I might also consider physical goods (still token-based, but more like a rental), such as musical instruments or audio/video equipment, which would also involve handling shipping and returns.

I’m curious, how are you currently thinking about managing the token usage? Are you looking for a fully automated system, or would a manual process work to start with?

i’m open to evaluate either - the fully automated or manual
But i think credit/token/points system is very valuable solution to extend subscription process in shopify ecosistem, and move the user in anoter dimension without the focus to $$$

Absolutely a token-based rental system for physical goods is definitely possible with Shopify using a custom setup. You’ll just need to handle token tracking, rental logic, shipping, and returns through a custom backend, while still leveraging Shopify for product management and order flow.
