Move collection description below products story theme

Topic summary

A user working with the Story theme wants to reposition the collection description below the product grid while keeping the collection title at the top.

Solution provided:

  • Move the Collection title section below the Collection page section in the theme editor
  • Add an Image banner section above the product grid to display title and image at the top
  • Use Connect dynamic source buttons to link the banner’s image and heading to the collection’s metadata
  • Optionally hide the title/image from the collection description area (now below products) using theme settings

Key considerations:

  • Changes to the Default collection template apply to all collections using that template
  • Metafields enable dynamic content that changes based on which collection is being viewed
  • This approach helps with SEO by placing descriptive text higher on the page

The user confirmed this solution works well for their first Shopify store. Additional resources for customization, getting started with Shopify, and SEO optimization were shared.

Hey!

Cant find anywhere how i do this so i try to ask here, How do i move so i have the collection description below the products in Story theme? I still want the title to be above.

Hi, @Boriso32 . I can definitely look into this with you! Do you have any examples of how you’d like this page to look? Are you setting up a theme for the first time or just looking into updates you can make?

It looks like using Story, you can’t separate the “Collection title” or “Collection description” blocks from the “Collection title” section. That being said, you can make many other customizations that can help you acheive something similar to what you’re trying to do.

The first thing I’d recommend you do is move the Collection title section below the Collection page section. This will move your collection description under your product grid. Since you still want the top of the page to have a title (and possibly an image banner), I’d also recommend adding an Image banner section to the template, and moving it above the Collection page section. This will allow you to still display the image and title at the top of the page (along with the option to add more information like text or a button). If you want to remove the image and title from the collection description area (the section that’s now underneath your product grid), this is also possible using the settings in the theme editor. This guide on using sections and blocks has more information to help you do this.

Keep in mind that when you make changes to the Default collection template, those changes are applied to all collections using the template. This means that if you add the Image banner section, it will be added to all of your collections. In order for the image and title in this banner to change depending on the collection being viewed, you will want to use metafields. Metafields allow you to save specialized information that isn’t usually captured in the Shopify admin. You can also use metafields for internal tracking, or to display specialized information on your online store. You can read more about using metafields here. That being said, in this specific example all you should need to do is use the Connect dynamic source buttons.

To do this for the image, you’ll want to click the Image banner section to open its settings. From here, click the Connect dynamic source button and select the Image option under where it says Collection - Main Page.

For the title you’ll need to click the Heading block under the Image banner section. From here, click the Connect dynamic source button and select the Title - Single line text option shown under where it says Collection - Main page.

You can see some examples below of how this can look once it’s all set up.

Please let me know if you have any questions, or trouble doing this. I’m happy to help further!

Hi Erin,
Yes this is my first shopify I build. Only worked with WP before. My original thought was to only move the description of the category down to below the products to facilitate SEO & that the customers do not have to be met by a long text. But this works just as well. Many thanks for the help and your thorough explanation.
